Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
Awesome athletes and cool gear put the X in Extreme, as they deliver skills, thrills and action. Colwell briefly covers the basics of BMX competition: the parks equipped with ramps and rails, the on-the-ground and aerial tricks, and the rounds of competition. She also briefly introduces a few of the sport's stars. Her clear writing, while matter-of-fact, captures the excitement but does not glamorize the sport. Only one injury is mentioned. Fantastic photographs capture the excitement and wonder: "How do they do that?" A BMX park diagram, a glossary, recommended reading, and Internet sites round out this very basic offering. None of the three websites deal with BMX and none are aimed at the young audience of the book. The low lexile of this entry in the "Blazers X Games" series makes this accessible to young readers, who will probably ask for more detailed books after reading this one. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
