Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Christopher J Graver, PhD, ABPP-CN(Madigan Healthcare System)
Description: Board certification in neuropsychology, although ahead of the curve compared to psychology in general, still lags behind stated goals. This book introduces readers to the board certification process and assists in navigating the path to becoming a board certified neuropsychologists.
Purpose: The board certification process in neuropsychology is often misunderstood and fraught with misperceptions and unfounded anxiety. The main goal of this book is to clarify the process and provide a resource for those beginning the journey.
Audience: This book, part of an esteemed series by the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, has a narrow audience in clinical neuropsychologists. The authors, who all recently took part in the process and were successfully board certified, founded a resource group, BRAIN, to assist in the process, endowing them with top-notch qualifications for writing this guide.
Features: The overall structure of this book uses two approaches. The first is a discussion of common myths related to board certification and the actual experiences of the authors, along with relevant articles. The second is a step-by-step guide to the four sections of the board certification process: application, written exam, written samples, and oral exam. Each of these four sections is broken into subsections with tables that summarize the key steps that are elaborated later in the chapter. Helpful tips from the authors' experience are included, along with reassurance for readers with high anxiety. External resources are mentioned where available.
Assessment: This is an expedient and helpful guide to board certification. Not only does it highlight the major sections and break them down to manageable steps, but it also spends ample time dispelling anxiety-provoking myths. It would be folly not to own this book.
