Overview

1939. The tenth year of the Great Depression in America. Europe teeters on the brink of war. In Atlantic City, New Jersey - a seashore resort town that springs to life every summer - Jack Laurel comes of age.

At 15, Jack's life is turned upside down by an almost magical convergence of people and events. A mysterious boardwalk entertainer inspires a love of literature, a feud with neighborhood bullies escalates, and innocence is lost. Jack stumbles into commodities trading with two men: one a reclusive mystic, the other a charismatic pitchman and mathematical savant. The musings of a boardwalk fortuneteller set the three partners up to reap unimagined profits - but a house of cards is about to come down around them and, with it, the wrath of an iron-fisted crime boss.

In his first novel, J. Louis Yampolsky evokes the days when Atlantic City was the "Playground of the World" - the home of gilded Arabesque hotels, parades, pageants, and the famous Steel Pier. A Boardwalk Story is a startling debut from a remarkable new voice in American fiction.

"A Boardwalk Story" is an amazing first novel!

I was only four years old in 1939, but my parents took me to Atlantic City on many occasions in the ensuing years. This brings back all the memories of Steel Pier, the boardwalk, and the rolling chairs. The story itself is captivating which is narrated through the eyes of a 15 year old Jack Laurel. It involves first loves, mobsters, boardwalk entertainers, prostitutes, neighborhood bullies, and a fortune teller. The way the novel is written is easily followed and is impossible to put down.

    The Old Atlantic City

I could not put this book down. I felt the raw emotions of each character as they became my friends.
The smell of the ocean ran through my veins as I walked the boardwalk with Jack.
If you have ever visited the Old Atlantic City with the Steel Pier, the High Diving Horse and the Dennis and Traymore Hotel this book will take you back to that era.

    I highly recommend this book.

It is sure to become a movie.

    A MUST READ

    A Trip Down Memory Lane

This is a story for all ages. I know that I want my children, and when they are old enough, my grandchildren to read it. What a memorable tale for those of us who know Atlantic City and for those who want a look back into a simpler time. A time when there were no casinos, just wonderful characters who dotted the boardwalk scene.
I loved this book. It gave me many hours of pleasure.

"A Boardwalk Story" is more than just a beach book

"A Boardwalk Story" sends you back to Atlantic City during the years when men wore suits and ladies wore dresses to walk the boards. Although the story is told through the eyes of a teenage boy, it does not lack sophistication and quality of adult characters. This novel is a quick page turner as you become engossed in the unique and interesting characters and events occuring. The characters in this book are unforgettable. I highly recommend it for all readers.

    Engaging book

This book captured my interest from the very start. It was easy to relate to all the characters and become engaged by their surroundings and actions. The book allowed me to put myself right on the boardwalk of Atlantic City during the times before World War II. You could really feel the emotions of each of the characters. Looking forward to the sequel!
