Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
Young snake lovers are sure to enjoy this installment in the "Far-Out and Unusual Pets" series. Beginning with an introduction to boas and pythons in the wild, readers learn about their habitats, hunting and eating habits, and the ways in which snakes sense the world around them. The authors discuss boas and pythons separately, outlining the varied characteristics of each and emphasizing the size of these potential pets. Readers are encouraged to adopt from breeders, and taught the unique housing needs of cold-blooded pets. The emphasis throughout is on responsible pet ownership, and the potential danger of keeping a boa or python as a pet. For those considering the possibility of bringing home a constrictor, the authors make it very clear that this is not a decision to be made lightly, and briefly discuss the environmental problems that abandoned pet pythons have wrought on the Florida Everglades. An abundance of large color photographs illustrate the variety in snake size and coloring, and those depicting kids and adults interacting safely with snakes are particularly effective at supporting the numerous safety tips included in the text. A few digital illustrations depicting cartoon snakes are poor substitutes for the realism of the photographs, and readers will be disappointed not to see actual photographs of some of the more interesting topics discussed, such as a snake digesting its prey. Colorful text boxes highlight a variety of additional topics such as the difference between ?venomous' and ?poisonous,' and why snakes shed their skin. Lots of white space, brightly colored borders and headings, and a conversational tone make this an accessible and inviting option for reluctant readers, and the information included will be a useful starting point for students writing reports. A good addition for public and school libraries needing more information on the topic. Includes vocabulary list, additional resources, and an index. Reviewer: Chelsea Couillard-Smith
