Overview

As flesh and exhilarating as an ocean breeze, this strikingly handsome photo essay introduces the very young to boats. Big and small, propelled by wind or oars or engines, here are all kinds of vessels, captured in crisply detailed photographs and an engagingly simple text. Whether they are hauling cargo to distant ports, ferrying passengers across narrow straits, putting out fires, defending our shores, or just helping people enjoy themselves, these boats will have children everywhere clamoring to climb on board!

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-This book is filled with fabulous full-color photographs of vessels of various shapes, sizes, and styles. Bold borders in different shades surround the photos and set them off admirably. The small amount of large-print text introduces many types of watercraft and the different tasks that they have been designed to accomplish. Some of the vocabulary, though, may be difficult for young children or ESL students to read and understand without help. Also, a picture of a jet skier without a safety vest or helmet may cause concern for some. This title covers the same material as Gail Gibbons's Boat Book (Holiday, 1983) and Donald Crews's Harbor (Greenwillow, 1982), both of which are illustrated with drawings. With its eye-catching photos, Boats Afloat should find a useful place in primary-level transportation units.-Stephani Hutchinson, Pioneer Elementary School, Sunnyside, WA
