Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Greaves Rudolf
Young male readers will enjoy making the sounds associated with the minivan in this book, which is one of a series of four books about vehicles in the "MiniBug" books series. Board books that the very youngest readers will savor are in high demand. This one is colorful, has rounded corners, is sized for small hands, and is about a subject that delights young male readers—vans that make noises and get into many different situations. However, this van is played with by Bob a mini-bug, a blue circle with wings and feet, a little hair, and a face, and who carries a suitcase. Apparently the other books in the series also have cute little creatures with names that make the vehicles go. Artwork is cartoonlike with bright colors and arrows pointing to the parts of the van. Young readers will appreciate the diagram-like quality of the illustrations, but the text leaves much to be desired. Many of the sentences begin with Bob's name or a variation on it. Much of the space on the pages is filled with words that are not part of the narrative but are interjections and words for sounds. One of the nicest touches in the book's design and illustration relates to the beginning of the story with its white background where we meet Bob, and then the end of the story where the background has become darker blue because we are saying good-bye and good-night. Consider carefully. What adults see as drawbacks may not be so in the eyes of the child. Reviewer: Leslie Greaves Rudolf
