Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
This boxed set of ten minibooks focuses on rhyming words. Each book presents a different word family, such as -AN in "Dan's Plan," -AM in "Cam's Snack," and -EN in "The Hen in the Den." Nine of the twelve pages in each book feature pen-and-ink drawings with one-color accents, and these cover most of the page except for a line of print along the bottom. The text consists of loosely related sentences. The emphasis is on the rhyming words rather than on cohesive storylines. An example: "Lin is in the bin./Lin has a pin./Lin can spin and spin./The bin is tin." (Lin is depicted as a cat wearing a red scarf.) The box includes a set of thirty puzzle flashcards for additional practice with rhyming words, as well as a card with "7 Hints for Teaching Your Child to Read." Parents of young children may find this set useful for one-on-one sharing to develop an interest in learning to read. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
