Editorial Reviews

Gordon Flagg
Following up his 1990 look at Dylan's much-lauded early career, Williams moves onto trickier ground in this examination of the musician's later work. The new volume begins with the 1974 live album "Before the Flood"--an appropriate starting point since, although he gives due attention to what is generally considered Dylan's strongest skill, his songwriting, Williams emphasizes Dylan's concert performances throughout. Unfortunately, many of those he praises are memorialized only on privately made recordings, and that's frustrating to fans who have no access to them. Because of Williams' concentration on concerts, his books complement Riley's song-oriented Dylan critique, "Hard Rain". Moreover, unlike Riley and most other Dylan scholars, Williams finds much of value in Dylan's post-"Blood on the Tracks" career; he even defends the universally panned 1978 film "Renaldo and Clara". He may not convince readers of the merit of Dylan's generally maligned 1980s recordings, but he makes a remarkably strong argument that should persuade fans to give them another hearing.
