Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This make-up book is not designed for models, actresses, or career women. Its advice is aimed at and crafted for teenagers, those sweet creatures who nightly frantically scan their mirrors for evidence of some erupting trouble, or just persistent ugliness. NBC Today Show beauty editor Bobbi Brown writes reassuringly for those who fear that they're out of synch. Her counsel shows that she realizes that, for teens, self-image can be knocked askew by one friend's jibe and buoyed by one kind look. Her simple, patient, and upbeat advice touches issues ranging from eye shadow to mid-day menstruation, from panty lines to kid sisters.

Browsing through this book might teach parents a thing or two about that "little girl" who lives upstairs.

School Library Journal
YA-Brown and Iverson give teens basic beauty tips and a large boost to their self-esteem. They set the tone with "makeunders," before-and-after color photos of young people in which a very limited amount of makeup has been applied to highlight their naturalness, and with advice that begins in bold, hot-pink letters: "YOU SHOULD STAND OUT, NOT YOUR MAKEUP." The advice is broken down into lists and bullets and accompanied by diagrams and photos. The authors stress the importance of diet and exercise. There are chapters for African Americans, Latin Americans, Asian Americans, and "Global Beauties." Later chapters give more recommendations for teens who are athletes and those hoping to be models. An index of resources provides ideas on where to buy beauty products, advice on going to a dermatologist, and general thoughts on weight loss. Brown's own line of beauty products are not mentioned in the body of the book, but merely listed as a Web site in the index. Sound, supportive, and conservative beauty advice that teens (and their parents) will love.-Jane S. Drabkin, Potomac Community Library, Woodbridge, VA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

A Letter From Bobbi

I wanted to do a book for teens because I see so many beautiful girls who don't appreciate what's special about them. It's easy to find what's pretty in other people but in ourselves we tend to see only what we don't like. I'm writing the book I wish I'd had when I was a teen. For the days I felt "unpretty." For when I felt that I'd never look like the "tall blond girls." For straight answers to all my stupid beauty questions. But mostly, I wish I'd had this book so that I would have known that I was okay just the way I was, that there's more than one way to be pretty and that none of my questions would ever be considered "stupid."

Try to think of every young woman in this book as your friend -- someone who's here to help you figure out those confusing things that keep you from being happier and more relaxed about your looks. The point of this book is to take the mystery out of all those confusing acts (like, How do you curl eyelashes anyhow? What do I do with shadow?) and rituals (How do I deal with my eyebrows?) that the totally together girl seems to do with her eyes closed. But the fact is that even the Patty Perfect of your life (that girl you envy deep down) probably has a few insecurities of her own.

The one thing I wish I'd known as a teen is that most women and girls suffer from a lack of self-esteem. The good news is that, with time, all of us gain a certain amount of self-acceptance. And self-acceptance to me is the key to looking pretty -- if you are happy being who you are, you will look your prettiest. If there's one thing I want every girl to take from this book, it's the ability to discover and celebrate her ownunique beauty.

I know the teen years are not the easiest time to "just be you" or in any way different from all the girls around you. It's natural to want to fit in -- and to be accepted. But it's also important to know when fitting in means losing yourself -- when conforming takes you past the point of knowing who you are. That's not healthy or positive.

We can change our hair color and even our eye color. We can improve our bodies and our skin texture. We can learn to use makeup to emphasize our eyes or downplay a feature. But self-acceptance involves learning to live with (and treasure) those fundamental things we can't change -- our height, build, skin color, strong nose, pale skin, freckles, etc., the very features that make each of us beautiful and unlike anyone else. So turn the page and start picturing exactly what makes you special: together we'll turn that into your own personal beauty style.

    a great help!

This book was great! It really helped me figure out some things to do for my makeup. It has almost everything you need to know but, i only gave it three stars because true beauty is from the inside and we all need to remember that makeup can make us look nice but, it can't make us be nice:)But all in all she did a great job with this book!

A book to waste your money on!

I recommend this book due to it's clarity. There were many illustrations and Bobbi Brown has a keen understanding of her teenage audience. The book offered alot of tips on how to apply your makeup, all the way from having a perfect, flawless face to being spontaneous with colors. It even had a section for African- American , Hispanic, and Asian girls. A definite plus for any beauty book. Bobbi Brown's goal is to unleash the beauty of every girl and help them to achieve happiness with themselves. Her book is well-written and very helpful. You won't be disappointed.

    What Every Girl Needs!!

I thought that this book was absoloutly fabulous. My parents don't let me wear beauty products but with Bobbi Brown, who told me all about natural and discreet make-up, I can get away with anything! A must reed for teenage girls-comprehensive and informative information in a language we can all understand! The reason I rate this book only 4 stars not 5 is because it's not always positive about your natural beauty and sometimes tells you to wear make-up and all your problems will go away. All in all, this is the best beauty book I have ever read. 4 STARS!!

    It was GREAT!!!!! BEST BOOK!!!!

I enjoyed this book a lot although I only read a little of my cousin's copy. I think the best part of the book is the tecniques it shows to cover up zits (since I have a lot of them). I used to put on a lot of make-up that looked cakey just to cover them, but this showed me how not to. It also gives great tips for what to buy, and how to shape your eyebrows without spending the money to get them waxed. It was totally worth the money.

This book is a MUST HAVE!!!

I absolutely LOVE this book!!! I think it's great for anyone of any age but definitely a must read for teenagers and preteens because it teaches you how to wear make-up and still have a beautiful, natural look. It covers just about anything you need to know to look your best and instills confidence. It makes you feel like YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and that you don't need to cake on tons of makeup to look your best, even if you have problem skin. I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book to anyone and my only regret is not having bought it earlier.

    NOT AWESOME AT ALL

I am not an idiot, but this book talks to us like we are all fools! Mesmerizingly stupid and banal. The only good thing about this book is that the author makes you feel like ANYONE can be a make-up artist regardless of talent or know-how. In other words- if she can do it ANYONE and I do mean ANYONE can call themselves an 'ARTIST'. The writing is coy and hypocritical. She constantly says there are no 'rules' then proceedes to dictate one rule after the other. This book is much too negative and boring

    Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty

Whatever your reason is to search/browse/click on this bbok, you have found the perfect book and you don't need any others! it'll show you how to feel the best you can about yourself! This book is for people of all ages and all races! It covers everything you'd want to know! Skin care, makeup, self esteem, zits, questions, style, food, exercise, prom, preteen, braces, heights, etc! If you want to be a model, there's a section for you! if you want something to do with your mom on a rainy day (or any day!) there's a section for you! Don't think that there won't be a section for yoU! Don't think that there won't be a section for you! Africans, Latinos, Asians, and Global Beauty is included. Also, there's an index of resources about things like weight loss and the dermatologist! This book has more that 200 pages and is filled with colorful photographs and pictures. Of course, like everything in this world, this book isn't perfect. it's too bad they don't give makeup advice for people who wear glasses! But there's so much information and topics covered that I don't blame her for accidently leaving that out. If you're still trying to decide, please stop. The answer is yes, you should definitely, no doubt, of couse, get this book for yourself and everyone else you know who deserves a great book!

too many words, not enough photos!!!!!

this book talks down to young girls and though there are some nice photos, the tome tends to be condescending. No extraordinary make-overs, just lip gloss and patronizing jargon.Probably fun for girls under 10, but thats about it. POOR!

    Great book for preteens

I enjoyed this book. It was interesting but I pretty much already knew most of the stuff. So I would definetly reccomend this to younger teens or preteens or even people who are just beginning to use makeup. It covers a lot of topics and the main point is to keep it natural and be yourself. It would be a great gift for a daughter, sister, etc.

Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty: Everything You Need to Look Pretty, Natural, Sexy and Awesome

All words , no quality photo's, and not great make-up at all ! SAD !Look for books with full page photo's where the author actually did the make-up themselves. The face color never matched the neck, no blending- yuk!

Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty: Everything You Need to Look Pretty, Natural, Sexy and Awesome

My friends and I pooled our $$$ to get a copy of this book and were very dissapointed. Unlike Face Forward, the photos were ugly and useless. The text was contraditary in many places and the overall attitude was negative. Even though the author was ' a teen herself ' she seems not to have had any hardships from which to have learned anything or to be one of 'us'. Just because you have a make-up line does not mean you are talented. This is such a case!

Hear ye! Hear ye! Bobbi's book is close to a bible!

TEENS! NINE YEAR OLDS! MOMS! This book is for ANYONE! If you are looking for a birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, honor roll, election day, or ANYTIME present...than guess what... you clicked on the right link. There is a section for every color skin in the world in this book. You could even have what is described in her book as 'global beauty' and still find the right makeup to wear. There is even a section for you, preteens! You (honestly!) can be 9 or 19 and still absolutely love this book! This book is not the type of book you read once and then forget about. It can be used as a reference and looked back at again and again. Bobbi takes every topic she deals with and handles it with extreme care, so as not to offend anyone. She provides us with valuable information about not only makeup, skincare, and hair, but also with self esteem and confidence. She lets us know that no two people are alike and that is the way it should be. She proves this to us by showing us pictures of real people, not only supermodels. She encourages the use of role models throughout the book. Moms, the authors do pay attention to you, too. Bobbi Brown gives the person reading this book reminders that her mom is a person too....I don't know. If you want to know about this than you'll just have to buy it, now won't you? But believe me when I say... if you are considering getting this book, or are thinking about getting this book or another book and just can't decide, DEFINITELY choose this one. OK? Promise? Good. I knew you would.

    This is a MUST HAVE

If any teenage, or pre-teenage girl is wondering whether or not to get this book: the answer is simple; YES. It is worth the money. This book mentions everything from perms to eyebrows, and is an invaluable resource. The makeup and colors are based on skin type and are really helpful when you are suffering from media-product-overload. This is a great book for anyone that wants to explore makeup and keep their skin beautiful. I strongly recommend it.
