Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble, Inc.
This make-up book is not designed for models, actresses, or career women. Its advice is aimed at and crafted for teenagers, those sweet creatures who nightly frantically scan their mirrors for evidence of some erupting trouble, or just persistent ugliness. NBC Today Show beauty editor Bobbi Brown writes reassuringly for those who fear that they're out of synch. Her counsel shows that she realizes that, for teens, self-image can be knocked askew by one friend's jibe and buoyed by one kind look. Her simple, patient, and upbeat advice touches issues ranging from eye shadow to mid-day menstruation, from panty lines to kid sisters.

Browsing through this book might teach parents a thing or two about that "little girl" who lives upstairs.

A Letter From Bobbi

I wanted to do a book for teens because I see so many beautiful girls who don't appreciate what's special about them. It's easy to find what's pretty in other people but in ourselves we tend to see only what we don't like. I'm writing the book I wish I'd had when I was a teen. For the days I felt "unpretty." For when I felt that I'd never look like the "tall blond girls." For straight answers to all my stupid beauty questions. But mostly, I wish I'd had this book so that I would have known that I was okay just the way I was, that there's more than one way to be pretty and that none of my questions would ever be considered "stupid."

Try to think of every young woman in this book as your friend -- someone who's here to help you figure out those confusing things that keep you from being happier and more relaxed about your looks. The point of this book is to take the mystery out of all those confusing acts (like, How do you curl eyelashes anyhow? What do I do with shadow?) and rituals (How do I deal with my eyebrows?) that the totally together girl seems to do with her eyes closed. But the fact is that even the Patty Perfect of your life (that girl you envy deep down) probably has a few insecurities of her own.

The one thing I wish I'd known as a teen is that most women and girls suffer from a lack of self-esteem. The good news is that, with time, all of us gain a certain amount of self-acceptance. And self-acceptance to me is the key to looking pretty -- if you are happy being who you are, you will look your prettiest. If there's one thing I want every girl to take from this book, it's the ability to discover and celebrate her ownunique beauty.

I know the teen years are not the easiest time to "just be you" or in any way different from all the girls around you. It's natural to want to fit in -- and to be accepted. But it's also important to know when fitting in means losing yourself -- when conforming takes you past the point of knowing who you are. That's not healthy or positive.

We can change our hair color and even our eye color. We can improve our bodies and our skin texture. We can learn to use makeup to emphasize our eyes or downplay a feature. But self-acceptance involves learning to live with (and treasure) those fundamental things we can't change -- our height, build, skin color, strong nose, pale skin, freckles, etc., the very features that make each of us beautiful and unlike anyone else. So turn the page and start picturing exactly what makes you special: together we'll turn that into your own personal beauty style.

This book comes loaded with education both mentally and physically. Written in a way that girls tune in and take an interest in the book and in themselves. I will buy this book for nieces. I have even peeked here and there for tips. Great gift or addition to any females library.

This book may seem like a glossy tale of the road to (im?)perfection, but Brown tells it like it is, with no hurt feelings. She gives all the hints and tips anyone needs but does so with sophistication and charisma, and in a more sensitive way than my mom ever could! The author dishes out her knowledge while never de-emphasising the importance of finding your OWN unique beauty..and really, that's what it's all about.Sounds cheesy,i know, butif you are a teen or (god/grand)parent looking to boostyour girl's confidence, this book is the perfect antidote to other stupidly cheesy celebrity/magazine endorsed atrocities. It sure as heck pulled me out of some dark days.

I bought this book with high hopes. It's a good book for teens who have no clue about makeup. It didn't give me much info, but it would be good for 12 year olds.

This book is great on so many levels. It is fun to read and gives great beauty advice, and at the same time gives girls a positive role model through the author, Bobbi Brown. Bobbi repeadedly says that looks arent so important and makeup should just be used to build confidince. She even gives idea of things to do if you find yourself obsessing about looks and things better to do with your time than being a model. I would recommend this book to any teen or preteen (who has an intrest in makeup, of course)

This book is awesome! My only complaint is that sometimes the lips are a bit overdone, but overall, it is great! My 17 year old sister and my mom both thought it was cool, too, so its for all ages! This is not a waste of time or money, and it shows you how to use make-up, but not cover up your natural beauty. Plus, there is so little make-up needed to pull off one of 'Bobbi's Looks', so one won't need to blow all money on make-up! Some topics do get to be way too heavy for the younger crowds, so I wouldn't reccomend this book to anyone under 12. Overall, must have!

I haven't read it entirely, but I've flipped through it and read some passages. I like how the author incorporates the image that it's truly what's on the inside that's important. that's the truth! no makeup can make you a beautiful girl. you make yourself beautiful by having a positive outlook on life. but what's also true is looking your best gives you confidence on the inside, which is a great step toward becoming a great person, because everybody's got value!

I am a 15 year old, and I just got this book for Christmas. I read it in one day! It was so awesome. I learned lots of new techniques, and not only that, I also learned to have confidence in myself and how to be a good person. I would reccomend this book for any teenager out there!
