Chapter One

It was late spring, and as they say, "April showers bring May flowers." It rained for six days straight. The ground on the range was very, very wet and far too muddy to play outside. Everyone stayed indoors, except to feed the animals and check on them. Even the animals all stayed locked up in the barn. Most animals do not like it when it rains and thunders. It spooks them out. All the animals were asleep, and Bobby was snuggled up right under Archie's head.

Inside the house, John, Tracy, and Adam were all asleep as well. It was lightning and thundering so hard that it woke Bobby up. Bobby was so confused and scared. He got up and started wandering around throughout the rest of the stable, hoping that one of the other animals were awake. But all the other animals were curled up and fast asleep. As he was walking up one aisle, he saw a glimpse of light.

So he hurriedly ran toward it.

Either someone had left the barn door unlocked or the wind had blown it open. So Bobby twisted his body through the crack and went outside. The rain was beating down heavily. The lightning was fierce, and the noise from the thunder roared. Very scared, Bobby started running, slipping and sliding in the mud. He ran and ran, getting dirty from head to toe. He was confused and scared.

Suddenly, he stopped and looked around. He didn't know where he was because everything looked so different in the storm. So he turned around to go back, but he didn't know which way to go. As he trotted, slipping and sliding and soaked all over, his feet lost its grip from under him. He slid and could not stop. The heavy downpour washed Bobby away right down into a nearby well. Bobby gave a very loud scream as he fell and plunged into the water.

Just then, Archie woke up. He looked all around his pen, but there was no Bobby. He got up and pushed open the gate with his head. Archie walked up one aisle and down the other of the stable, looking for Bobby. But Bobby was nowhere to be found.

As Archie was walking down the last aisle, he noticed that the barn door was slightly open. He then moved toward it and pushed it open with his head. All he saw were rain, mud, and lots of water falling. He heard the thunder and saw flashes of lightning. Somewhere in the distance, he heard a very faint cry. He recognized it. It was Bobby's. So he took off trotting, as slowly and carefully as he could, in the direction of the sound. Water splashed everywhere.
