Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Alice F. Stern
Tattoos and body piercing seem more popular than ever these days, making this a needed title on a timely subject. Miller's excellent resource includes clear and simple information and advice for those interested in this topic. The history of body art and the reasons people had and continue to have it done are covered. A decent glossary of the different symbols in a tattoo and what they mean is provided. Miller includes what characteristics to look for to get good, safe work done and how to find such a place or person. Safety considerations, such as the health risks of different pierced body parts are included, as is information on aftercare so that everything heals properly. Also discussed is how to get body art removed. Miller's writing style is very readable, accessible, and interesting. The presentation is more informational than graphic, with only eight pages of color photos included. The author includes an appendix that lists body art shops around the world. This is a must-read for anyone considering tattooing or piercing, and will be useful to those interested in the subject for personal reasons or for a school report. The Body Art Book belongs in most public library YA collections and high school libraries. Glossary. Illus. Photos. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
