Barnes & Noble - Lucy Tauss
Boney James's excellent 1997 release SWEET THING, was a tough album to follow up, but the L.A.-based saxophonist has done it admirably with his new release, BODY LANGUAGE. James has a talent for creating intricate, highly textural compositions, and although that talent is amply in evidence here, he decided to mix things up a bit stylistically. James teams with an orchestra on the rich, funky "Lovefest" and the swooping "Into the Blue," turns jazzy and atmospheric on "Bedtime Story," and demonstrates his R&B roots on "I'll Always Love You," featuring the vocal group Shai. He applies the trademark Boney James seductive burnish to the sinuous title track, and, on "Boneyism," he and fellow smooth jazz star, trumpeter Rick Braun, turn in a sultry duet. Another very fine album by a very fine player, BODY LANGUAGE speaks to the listener's heart, mind, and flesh.
All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Body Language is a fairly typical Boney James album in which the saxophonist who is heard on tenor, soprano, and alto plays in styles very close to Grover Washington, Jr. He is backed by studio rhythm section players, an occasional string section, and some electronics on material clearly designed to get maximum airplay on pop/jazz radio stations. James is a good player but he never really cuts loose or takes any chances on this set, and he has yet to break away from the Grover Washington influence to develop his own sound. Decent melodic background music but little more.

    One of his best

If there could be silk for the ears I would say this is it. I have completely enjoyed this particular album, and there isn't a composition on it I don't like. I had borrowed this album from a friend and I can't get enough. If you like Boney James I belive you will fall in love with this album the same way I have.
