School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-4-- Told in clear and simple question-and-answer format, these books are more appropriate for browsing and satisfying curiosity than for systematic study because of the uneven treatment of major concepts. Each starts with a basic concept: Body Science with the basic building blocks, the cells; Plant Science with the main categories of plants. Both titles deal with major physiological functions and systems, although some topics, such as the lungs, get greater emphasis than others, such as the brain. Typical chapter headings include: ``What are bones for?'' or ``Why are plants green? Inserts headed ``Did you know?,'' simple experiments, as well as the vivid full-color photographs further stimulate readers' interest. The information is accurate in what it states, but oversimplification is a problem. Thus, these books are adequate first introductions, but they need to be supplemented by more comprehensive titles. --Judith V. Lechner, Auburn University, AL
