Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
It is hard to be a young woman in today's world. Images of perfect bodies assault you from the cover of every magazine and every commercial. Rates of eating disorders and plastic surgery among teenagers are rising. The authors of this "Girl Zone" series book aim to help other young people confront these image problems. It tackles issues such as dieting, acne, exercise, and self-esteem. Throughout the book are quotes by other teens, as well as factoids on various healthy topics. For example, did you know that in 1998 more than 22,000 American teenagers had plastic surgery? It also includes a list of Web sites that girls can go to find more positive images on health and beauty. The overall tone of the book is very upbeat. The text is conversational and motivational, and the pages are filled with color. The authors wanted to help girls find better ways out of the beauty trap than dieting and self-hatred, and the book reflects that. This book should be on every young woman's bookshelf.
