Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Teachers and librarians may be surprised to find this "World's Most Dangerous Jobs" series coming from Crabtree, a publisher known for its high-quality books (many about world cultures) for young readers. Author Loveless, a journalist and photographer who specializes in defense-related publications, is fascinated by the culture of violence and military hardware. (Images in this book are mainly by Loveless himself.) Recommended Internet sites turn out to be mostly military recruiting websites (in this volume, for the Secret Service and U.S. Marshals). This book offers information about the dangers and duties of officers who protect people like the President, other political figures, and government witnesses. While a large part of protection involves planning ahead, Secret Service agents have a formidable array of body armor and weapons at their disposal, from intimidating sunglasses to assault rifles. The President's car contains "bottles of the President's blood" and is said to be impervious to "a nuclear blast from below." In Britain, Loveless has access to the Special Escort Group, a formidable armed motorcycle division of the Metropolitan Police. He makes it clear that a bodyguard must sacrifice his life if necessary: "Bodyguards are often killed while protecting their principals. In many cases, if a principal is killed, one or more of the bodyguards will almost certainly die, too." Adults need to check this series carefully to decide if the values, expressed and implied, are compatible with their community's and whether they choose to spend limited resources furthering military or paramilitary recruiting.
