Overview

There is no one quite like Joseph Hansen writing mystery stories these days. Hansen, the celebrated author of twelve novels featuring his gay detective, Dave Brandstetter, and winner of the 1992 Lambda Award for his last novel, A Country of Old Men, here weighs in with five superb stories of detection, all set on the rugged California central coast, where death is as dramatic and unpredictable as the landscape. Here Hack Bohannon, an ex-sheriff, keeps horses he owns, as well as some for other people, and solves crimes on the side. The inspiration for Bohannon came to Hansen, as he says in his graceful introduction to this volume, from his boyhood admiration of such Hollywood cowboys as Ken Maynard, Buck Jones, and Hoot Gibson. "I never lost the hankering to write westerns." He does them with flair and feeling in these long and varied stories, three of them featuring Bohannon and his crew - the grizzled ex-rodeo rider George Stubbs, the young student priest Manuel Rivera, Lieutenant Gerard, and Gerard's attractive young woman deputy, T. Hodges. Along the way the Bohannon gang discover that death can be dramatic and unpredictable. One non-Bohannon story in this collection features an old man in need of help, who fantasizes that Donald, the son he never had, has finally come to him. Or is it fantasy? Another story, "Molly's Aim," concerns the consequences of a passionate attachment one man feels for another, and how it impacts on the life of the story's central character, Molly Byrne, whose life was changed forever by her relationship with one of these men. But you pick your own favorite Joseph Hansen tale from this first-rate collection, stories that are muscled and supple and full of the wisdom and writing magic that this fine author has accumulated over the years.

From the author of the acclaimed Dave Brandstetter series and winner of the Private Eye Writers of America Lifetime Achievement Award comes a superb new collection of mysteries. Fascinating crime fighter Hack Bohannon roams along the central California coast in five tight contemporary stories--some classic Bohannon and some with memorable new characters.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In five new short stories, Hansen is in top form, delighting readers with surprising, often risk-taking, fiction. This will be no surprise to followers of the acclaimed Dave Brandstetter series (Brandstetter was one of the first gay PI heroes), which ended last year with A Country of Old Men . Three of the stories feature Hack Bohannon, a rugged horse rancher on the California coast who sleuths on the side. In ``The Olcott Nostrum'' Hack and colorful cohorts help an old woman unearth the mystery of her inherited farmhouse and find the formula for the title's legendary cure-all. Throughout, Bohannon's wife Linda drifts in and out of a catatonic state brought on by a kidnapping and rape, although her plight is apparently forgotten in the second story, ``The Owl in the Oak.'' The pick of the fivesome is ``Molly's Aim.'' Molly, a motel chambermaid in her small hometown, waits for years for the return of Carl, the high school hero she loved, who cheated her of her share of the loot from a murder/robbery. Also arriving in town is Hugh; he loved Carl too and was also betrayed. The stars collide in this taut masterpiece of short crime fiction. (June)
Library Journal
Hansen, best known for his Dave Brandstetter mysteries, provides five stories, the majority centered around ex-sheriff/horsekeeper Hack Bohannon ( Bohannon's Book , Penguin, 1989) and his friends from the sheriff's office.
Ray Olson
Best known as the creator (and recent destroyer) of gay insurance detective Dave Brandstetter, Hansen, like many another mystery writer, has another series shamus in the stable--literally. Hack Bohannon's an ex-deputy sheriff in central coastal California who runs a stable and picks up the odd dollar as a private dick. Like Brandstetter, Bohannon, although not gay, is a man's man; it's easy to visualize him as the Marlboro guy. This book features Bohannon in three longish short capers and fills out the page count with two other stories, one of them involving Bohannon's supporting cast, though not the riding sleuth himself. The devices that drive the stories are all pretty hackneyed, but Hansen's wonderful, choppy-smooth style, so evocative of the sparsely clad hills of Bohannon's country and the impending doom of "development" that threatens it, and his ability to create appealing protagonists make these tales the kind of mystery writing that higher-toned genre fans, and plenty of nonfans, too, find awfully satisfying.
