Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
One day, Bokuden and his fellow passengers were waiting for the ferry when a fierce warrior cut in line. The poor peasant whose place he took protested, but the warrior merely showed his sword and forced him to go to the back of the line. On the boat, the warrior took the best spot and continued to intimidate the other passengers. The only one who refused to be bullied was Bokuden. He closed his eyes and dozed peacefully. This infuriated the warrior, and he challenged Bokuden to a sword fight. Bokuden agreed, suggesting that they take one of the rowboats to shore so there would be more room for their fight. When the rowboat reached shore, the warrior quickly jumped out. Bokuden did not. Instead, he dipped his oar in the water and started rowing back toward the ferry, saying, "This is what is called sword fighting without swords. And unless you are as great a swimmer as you are a warrior, we are done with our first lesson." Part of the "On My Own Folklore" series from Millbrook Press, this Japanese folktale is based on the life of Tsukahara Bokuden, a great swordsman who lived in Japan from 1489 until 1571. Illustrated in full color with easily understood text, this book also comes complete with afterword, a glossary, and a list of suggested books for further reading about Japanese culture, martial arts, and swordsmanship. Written at a third grade reading level, this is a good multicultural choice for classroom libraries. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
