Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Every year the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition showcases "recent work by some of the finest and newest illustrators of children's literature from around the world." For 2005 the judges selected 85 artists whose work was on exhibit at the show. That work is included in the Annual, along with their brief biographies. The cover illustration is by Max Velthuijs, to whose memory the volume is dedicated. A tribute to him is followed by "A View from the Jury," an insightful look at the state of the art today. There is a feeling expressed that the exhibition is not as exciting or interesting as it might be because some well-established artists are missing and some have sent other than there best work. Despite this, it is a remarkable collection of art, especially considering the lack of Americans represented in either the fiction or nonfiction categories. We see here some of what we are missing in the picture books published in the United States, in media and styles so varied that it is pointless to name any as "most intriguing" in this visual feast. 2006, Minedition/Penguin, Ages 10 to Adult.
