Bolton Swings Sinatra

Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
First, give the man credit for sheer nerve. Interpreting the hallowed repertoire made famous by the greatest popular singer of the 20th century is quite an undertaking. Second, give the man credit for pulling it off with panache. No, Michael Bolton's Swings Sinatra isn't going to make you chuck out Sinatra's Capitol and Reprise albums. But it will draw you back again and again to sample its own blithe charms. Wisely, Bolton stays true to himself, never aping Ol' Blue Eyes' patented phrasing. Bolton does indeed swing these iconic songs -- just not in Sinatra's manner. A from-the-heart belter, Bolton has always been a romantic no matter the musical idiom he takes on, and...

A from-the-heart belter, Bolton has always been a romantic no matter the musical idiom he takes on, and great tunes like "Night and Day," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," and "New York, New York" provide him with firm ground from which to soar. The big-band charts and buoyant rhythms bolster his hardy pipes, bringing out the old-school crooner in him. He even invites his girlfriend, Nicolette Sheridan, along for the ride, duetting with the Desperate Housewife on "The Second Time Around." While Bolton may have been as inspired by Rod Stewart's recent reincarnation as by Sinatra's iconic presence, the results on Bolton Swings Sinatra are as genuinely heartfelt as they are rousing.
All Music Guide - Rob Theakston
So it's come to this: a Bolton record taking a page from Rod Stewart's successful career reinterpreting the American classics, which really isn't something new because Bolton's been doing it his whole career -- Stewart just had a brief phase to cash in on an aging baby boomer market that used to think he was sexy. Nevertheless, this is a treat for Boltheads to savor: a 12-song tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes from one of the late 20th century's most successful adult crooners. It's a session of well-polished, by-the-numbers renditions of some of Frankie's most well-loved anthems, including a duet with fiancée/Desperate Housewife Nicolette Sheridan. Bolton doesn't break any new ground here, but his consistent vocal stylings are comforting and resonate just as well as they did nearly two decades ago, when his pop career launched him into the stratosphere.

    Is he losing his mind?

I was thrilled to preorder this album. Love Frank Sinatra, adore Michael Bolton. The two should NEVER mix. At first, I thought it was a girl singing.....takes some time to get used to Michael's high pitch....The orchestration on this album was superb, the singing was awful.....stick to your other stuff Michael...Frank's is way out of your league.....I couldn't listen to the whole thing. What a waste.

    Bolton hits a homerun

Even though many artists are reaching back into the 40's & 50's to cover/record some of the old standards, no one does it better than Michael Bolton! He adds his own style & sound to these Sinatra favorites....making for a great album. It's a perfect way to kick back and enjoy these great songs again.
