School Library Journal
ea. vol: 48p. charts. diags. maps. glossary. index. (Modern Military Techniques Series). CIP. Lerner. 1987. PLB $9.95. Gr 6-9 These books, which cover some of the essential strategies used in conventional warfare, are packed full of data including maps and technical specifications. As they were originally published in Britain in 1985, some of the data is no longer current. Subma rines explores the world of the submari ner. Incorporated in Gibbons' study are a number of fascinating topics ranging from a brief history of the submarine in modern warfare to how subs work. Bombers examines attack aircraft and their subsequent use in warfare. The contents include aircraft design; weap ons; costs; and air, land, and sea tac tics. The superb assortment of illustra tions, under careful guidance, can be ample stimulus for discussion among children too young to understand the sophisticated texts. Although compara ble titles do exist, both of these books offer unique perceptions into the world of war. L. R. Little, Houston Secon dary School, B.C., Canada
