Well, if you're Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, you do it with delectable tunes and a spirited performance! Teaching kids to stay fit and healthy is essential, but how do you make the lesson go down with the proverbial spoonful of sugar? Well, if you're Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, you do it with delectable tunes and a spirited performance! The pair earned a Grammy nomination for their last release, Pocket Full of Stardust, and with Bon Appétit! they apply their irresistible blend of bluegrass, folk, and pop to educating children about health and fitness. These gals make learning serious fun, touting the virtues of living healthily and enjoying food. Get into the groove with "Breakfast Power," a swing-inspired ditty with trombone and sax that reveals the importance of feeding your body and brain in the morning. Marxer suggests many ways to beef up those biceps on "Big Strong Muscles" -- play air guitar to this jammin' track's electric solo, and those muscles are sure to appear in no time. And while you're working out, don't forget to stay hydrated with "Water," where fiddle and mandolin provide much-needed nourishment as the gals sing, "You can slip it through a straw, you can slurp it from a cup / But you need a lot of water, better drink it all up." The question of why you have to wash your hands before dinner is deftly answered on "Germs," an amusing tale of how the little bugs travel from playground to book bag to hands. This inspiring duo marry their intellectual and artistic goals on a disc that will appeal to both kids and parents but especially to teachers -- it's the next-best thing to teachers actually singing their daily lessons in health class.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
As the title suggests, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer's Bon Appétit! Musical Food Fun introduces kids to the world of food, exploring the different meals of the day, how you get your food, and how to eat right with a smorgasbord of musical styles. "Breakfast Power" emphasizes the importance of the first meal of the day with a '30s jazz-inspired beat and melody; "Big Strong Muscles" has an appropriately gutsy, honky tonk sound. Most of Bon Appétit! features Fink and Marxer originals, such as the folky, sweetly silly "Water" and the swing-y "Hula Hoop," although there are a few musical nods, such as "The Garden Song" and "Potato," a song about spuds set to the melody of "The Mexican Hat Dance." Other highlights include "A Little Taste of This, a Little Taste of That," "Five a Day," and "The Food Pyramid." A cute, quirky album, Bon Appétit! offers children an education in nutrition and different kinds of music at the same time.
