Library Journal
When her marriage of 22 years ends, Cali Reynolds is left alone and seeking answers to explain the failure of her marriage. She conducts her research at the Den, an exclusive BDSM club, where she hopes to explore her submissive fantasies and learn if she truly is submissive in her sexual desires. At the Den, Cali encounters Jake McCallister, a professional Dom and part owner of the club. Jake thinks Cali is a frustrated cougar seeking validation of her sexual appeal after being dumped by her husband. When he meets Cali, Jake realizes she genuinely wants to know about herself and is determined to be the Dom she explores in her fantasies. As Cali discovers self-acceptance of her submissive tendencies, Jake discovers Cali may be the sub he didn’t even realize he was looking for. She’s not a perfect sub, but she’s perfect for Jake.

Verdict Cali’s character is more fully realized than Jake’s, but the two are explosive together as they draw the reader deeper into their story. Their relationship quickly moves from a business transaction into a deep, emotional connection, which makes Aicher’s first contemporary erotic romance appealing to readers bridging the gap between mainstream romance and Fifty Shades of Grey. Aicher is the author of the paranormal “Energen” series (The Dragon Stirs; Stone of Ascension); this title will appeal to fans of the works of Lora Leigh, Maya Banks, or Sylvia Day.—Melanie C. "Do you like bondage?"

"I don't know."

"Spankings? Whips? Floggings?"

"I don't know."

"Exhibitionism, being a slave, serving a Master?"

"Again, I don't know."

"Golden showers, enemas or any other classification of water sports?"

"What?" Cali Reynolds gasped then shuddered. Water sports? "God, no."

The long-haired co-owner of The Den paused in his barrage of questions to eye her intently. He braced an elbow on the desk and leaned in, assessing her, the blue polo shirt tugging across his shoulders, his muscled biceps flexing. Seth Mathews was the last obstacle she had to pass before she could be granted membership to the exclusive club. He gave a half smile at the expression of pure disgust that had to be on her face.

"There are members here who do enjoy those activities, Ms. Reynolds," the man said. "These are standard interview questions. I hope your opinions wouldn't be so blatantly displayed in the presence of those who do like those things."

She winced. Her hands clenched in her lap and she hoped the large desk between them hid the action. "I didn't mean any disrespect. It's just not for me."

He nodded then glanced at the paper on his desk, making a mark on the page. He appeared younger than she'd expected, maybe late thirties, but his age didn't hinder the authority he exuded. "What are you looking for, then?" He studied her, missing nothing.

She swallowed, her stomach knotting into a state of sickly pain. "I don't know, exactly," she answered, her face heating with embarrassment. She tore her gaze from his and stared at her lap. She picked uncharacteristically at the small hangnail on her thumb, wondering if the straight-cut black slacks and purple sweater set had been too conservative for this interview.

He sighed, the pen clattering against the desk as he tossed it down and leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest. "Then why are you here? The Den is the most exclusive BDSM club in the Twin Cities. If you don't know what you want or like, then why come here?"

She snapped her chin up, desperation snaking into her voice. "Because you are the most exclusive club. I have to get in here."

"Why?"

Cali ducked her head, tucking her hair behind her ear, using the habitual move to calm herself. Why, indeed. "I'll never try this anywhere else." She waited for him to respond, but he didn't. So she continued, filling in the silence with the truth. "It's taken me a very long time to understand what I desire. Just as long to accept that what I crave sexually is way outside the box of normal. And even longer to do something about it. This isn't a game for me, if that's what you're thinking."

He picked up the pen, letting the object flip absently between his fingers. "Why now?"

"If not now, then it's never." She took a deep breath and hoped he believed her, because it was true. This was her one and only chance of safely getting what she secretly fantasized about. She couldn't risk the exposure by going anywhere else.

He sat forward. "Why do you think you're a submissive if you've never participated in any submissive activities?"

    Great read

Cali is a forty plus divorcee, who finds the courage to explore her darker desires. She struggles to accept her submissive side, but with Jake's guidance she does. Jake is a strong, understanding, compassionate dom, with a case of wonderlust. Until Cali and he found a reason to stay.

I requested a copy of this through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Im giving this 4 stars because honestly I could not put it down, I fought sleep to finish reading this and let me tell you, that doesnt happen very often.

Whilst reading I had one thought that repeated through my head... I can relate to this woman. That's not to say our stories are the same, but I understood where she was coming from.
After 22 years of marriage, a marriage that provided her with very little intimacy and no sex in the later stages Cali is understandably frustrated and her self esteem is at an all time low. She believes that she must be lacking if she could not entice her husband to have sex with her. What Cali craves is a man who can take the lead in the bedroom and give her the pleasure that she hasnt been able to get before. So she secretly joins a BDSM club in the hopes of finding someone who can give her what she needs. Here she meets Jake, the co-owner of the club and one of its Doms. Jake is supposed to give her another interview before deciding which of the clubs Doms would be best suited to introduce her to the club, but there is something about Cali that draws him to her.

For me this story felt natural. The progression of their relationship from Dom/Sub to something a little bit more wasn't instantaneous, their feelings about this was something they both tried to hide from the other. Their reservations about opening up and trusting each other outside the Scene were valid and added to the depth of the story.
The BDSM content in this was just right for Cali, it was an introduction to a world she was curious about. A world that she slowly begins to embrace. If this had gone full hardcore BDSM from the beginning it would have, should have, had Cali running screaming for the hills and probably a fair few readers too. I have read a few erotic novels that feature BDSM and sometimes I think they try too hard, they go to extreme and I get the feeling they are going for the shock factor, or they dont go hard enough and you find the Sub really just wants to have her hands tied while her partner pleasures her. This starts out fairly gentle with the BDSM aspect slowly increasing as Cali gets used to the experiences, each time pushing her a little further.

If you are expecting hardcore BDSM then don't read this.
If your expecting degradation and punishments then don't read this.
If you are looking for a gentle foray into the world of BDSM then this could be the book for you.
If you read and enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey then this could be the book for you.

    Me

I find it very frustrating that some of you will write a "book" for a review, but you NEVER include the number of pages.
One reader said this book has over 500 pages. I don't believe this person. The synopsis included, says there is 78,000 words. That is not even close to 500 pages.
Please be kind to others and include pages in your review. I DO!

    Nothing new

This wasn't a bad read but it is more if the same, bad boy dom, a new submissive, they have issues to face, they fall in love...

Glad it was on sale. If this is your favorite genre then I recommend it otherwise if you've read one you've read them all.

A few typos, page numbers were off.

    3.5 stars

Cali has finally decided to explore the idea that she might be a submissive, so she becomes a member of the most exclusive sex club in town. Although scared of taking this step, she knows that it's the only way she can ever be true to herself after years of being what everybody expected her to be. What she wasn't expecting was to have one of the owners take an interest in her. Not only does Jake bring her submissive side to the surface, he also wakes up feelings she had thought long forgotten - love and longing.

I loved the premise of this story very much, it's not often that we get an "older" woman as a main character, much less having her try something new at this stage in her life. That was what I liked best of Cali. She felt real, with insecurities and needs that had been unfilled for a long time, but strong enough to go after what she wanted. Then to pair her up with Jake, a self-proclaimed wanderer who'd never stayed long enough in one place, and you know that what you're going to get is one intense story.

And in that regards, I was not disappointed.

Lynda Aicher brought to the page an intense, engaging story full of sexual chemistry, emotions and a bit of drama. The characters were complex and their story was interesting. My only complaint is that I could not grasp Cali's full development throughout the story. Although I could see that she had grown as a person and that she finally accepted herself, I couldn't completely see her as a submissive. For me, there were simply not enough instances of Jake and Cali's scenes together at the club. Yes, we get to see how their connection grows, but it's more a sexual relationship and emotional entanglement more than anything in the D/s department.

Having said that, I believe that Bonds of Trust is a great start to a series with the introduction of the club setting and the additional characters that appeared in the story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Wicked Play series. I am curious to learn more about Deklan.

    Refreshing

“How did you know you were a dominant?” she fired back. He obviously was and she was tired of his game. Of the questions and disbelief. She wasn’t going to be intimidated into walking out because he doubted her intentions. “How did you discover what you liked and wanted without experiencing them? I bet you didn’t know for sure. No one can. So if inexperience is the only thing keeping me from getting into this club, then I ask you, how else am I supposed to learn?”

When I began reading this story, I was instantly drawn to Cali. A woman who isn’t confused by what she wants but, doesn’t know how to ask for what she wants. She was married to a man that never satisfied her sexually and feels ashamed that she may have been the cause of her sexless marriage. She goes to an elite BDSM club to find out if what her mind is telling her is true. Is she a submissive?  Her honesty astounded me and hooked me to the story.

“Her heart raced. It was the moment of truth. Time for her to admit her desires out loud and hope he didn’t laugh. “For someone to take control. To know intuitively what I want, sexually. To drive me crazy without me needing to direct the person. I want a man who will take me to the edge, make me beg for more until I don’t think I can take any more, and then give me more.” The loud drum of her heartbeat thundered in her ears.”

Jake, part owner of the club, is requested to be Cali’s guide and to match her to a Dom. What he isn’t expecting is the profound curiosity he has when he meets her. The idea that she is a true submissive, without the need for pain but her need to be truly dominated reignites the fire he thought he had lost a long time ago. What is meant to be a simple tour around the club turns into a hunger that only Cali can satisfy, but will his doubts and her insecurities ruin what they both desperately need?

“Trust me,” he whispered against her lips. “You belong to me.” He tensed, waiting for her answer. Never had one word been so important in his life”

I enjoyed reading Cali come in to herself as a submissive and I enjoyed reading Jakes character develop into a man that wanted to own Cali and release her from her doubt. If you haven’t read this book then you are missing out on a great story.

    Grade: B- (or 4 stars)

I really enjoyed this BDSM contemporary romance. Lynda Aicher delivers more than steamy sex on a St. Andrew’s Cross. She gives us interesting characters, although Jake didn’t have as much backstory as I would have liked, I did love Cali’s story. Her husband is much like the Three’s Company character Mr. Roper, a man sexually uninterested in his wife. (Poor Helen!) Cali’s marriage is not a complex story, but the divorce left a messy impact on her adult children and the people she thought were her friends. Her relationship with her daughter adds more dimension to her character and story. Her daughter’s struggle to accept Cali as a woman with physical appetites is both funny and sad. I cheered for Cali to excavate and embrace her sexuality.

The hero, Jake, has very few layers. His emotions and actions are as obvious to the reader as a ‘connect the dots’ line in an activity pad. He’s so transparent that, at times, it’s a wonder how he remains oblivious to his issues. On the plus side, Jake is a mystery to Cali. She is drawn to him like a moth to light. He dominates her. He pleasures her. Jake meets her needs, and Cali’s boundaries are pushed as she had hoped; sometimes, above and beyond her dreams. Despite Jake’s lack of backstory he does have some dimension and vulnerabilities, which is enough for me to chew on as a reader. His foster brothers are very chewy, too!

Bonds of Trust is the first book in the Wicked Play series. I very much enjoyed the sexy times, characters, story, and secondary characters. I’m anticipating Bonds of Need (Wicked Play, #2) as Jake’s foster brother, Deklan Winters, works his Dom charm on Cali’s friend Kendra, who has demons that Deklan will surely help her battle with pleasure. (This book was an advanced readers copy generously provided by Carina Press in exchange for an honest review.)

Classy and fits the BDSM scene just right

    ABOUT THE BOOK:

REVIEW: I was pleasantly surprised with this piece. It was gripping, held just the right amount of angst, and wasn’t over the top with BDSM. I’ve read a few reviews on this and have seen many mark it down based on the more “vanilla” approach to the BDSM, but I honestly don’t see the author holding back at all. The scenes are typical of other BDSM books I’ve read and yet, the author doesn’t go over board with them. It’s all very smooth and extremely classy.

The growing relationship between Jack and Cali is great. I could have done without the immediate acceptance she seemed to have to the scene and her almost lack of training, but the couple was very sweet together and seemed to bring out the right parts in one another. The only other thing I didn’t really understand was how most of the BDSM scenes were more for a submissive who would have been defiant. It didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but again, the story was very gripping.

From what I can tell is this looks to be book one in a series and it’s one I’m looking forward to following along. Ms. Aicher has a way with her words that draws you into heart of the characters. She is one to be watched and one who has now been added to my “stalking list.”

Four out of five stars for a great job.
