Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-While at obedience school, Rosie's dog, Bone Breath, disrupts the whole class and, at the first break, escapes. In chasing him, Rosie and her friend Kayo discover three people in the act of vandalizing their school. Kayo goes for help; Rosie remains on guard, but is captured by the vandals, tied up, and tossed into a dumpster, where she remains for more than half of this slim tale. She knows that she must escape before morning, when the garbage crusher arrives. Her struggle to survive becomes suspenseful as Kayo and Bone Breath try to locate her. The canine's antics are both amusing and heroic, and there is some genuine tension in Rosie's predicament, complete with gross-out descriptions of conditions in the dumptster. However, the mystery element lacks focus, and the vandalism seems to be only a device to put Rosie in jeopardy. The girls are not even involved in the actual capture of the criminals. The short length and scary-sounding title may attract reluctant readers, but there are many better middle-grade mysteries available.-Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL
