The town is plunged into chaos as a respected university professor falls under suspicion and Bartholomew's investigation has the academic community bristling. Piece by piece the good doctor begins to exhume a chilling conspiracy that lay hidden for three decades-a deadly scheme that could tear the town asunder.

In the tradition of Ellis Peters, A Bone of Contention continues the fascinating chronicles of Susanna Gregory's charismatic medieval sleuth.

Editorial Reviews

"Gregory produces a lively and intelligent tale set vividly in turbulent medieval England." —Publishers Weekly on An Unholy Alliance

"A believable medieval Cambridge, with muddy graveyards, fortified universities, and town/student antipathies." —Library Journal on An Unholy Alliance

"Complex and eventful." —Kirkus Reviews on An Unholy Alliance

"An Unholy Alliance is an exciting medieval whodunit that fans of historical mysteries will simply devour from first page to last." —The Midwest Book Review on An Unholy Alliance

Library Journal
A new college in 14th-century Cambridge hopes to improve its fortunes by displaying saintly relics recently discovered in the King's Ditch surrounding the towneven if it must manufacture its own. Series protagonists Brother Michael and physician Matthew Bartholomew of Michaelhouse College (An Unholy Alliance, LJ 12/96), who dispute medicine and argue murder theories, spot the scam but must tread carefully for fear of igniting various rival antagonisms in the town. This is a finely detailed cross section of life in medieval England, still recovering from the plague of 1348. Fans of historical mysteries will clamor for more.
