Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Jeffrey Bones, a young boy, gets ready for his Grandpa's birthday party by helping his Mom ice a birthday cake. On the ride to Grandpa's house, Jeffrey sits in the back of the car with the cake and a birthday card, which has a gift in it. When all the relatives and friends arrive at Grandpa's house for the party, however, the birthday card is missing. Jeffrey, using his detective skills, solves the mystery by questioning suspects and investigating clues. The birthday card and gift are found and presented to Grandpa, and everyone enjoys the party. This book, which is part of the "Bones" series, introduces young readers to the concepts of dialog and book chapters. The vocabulary is simple, and the sentences are short. Colorful illustrations, which are found on every page, help to make this an advanced version of a "picture book," which children are able to read by themselves. Reviewer: Leona Illig

K-Gr 2 - The boy detective makes his fifth appearance. It is his grandpa's birthday, and Bones is in charge of icing the cake. The sticky substance ends up on his hands, in his hair, and all over his clothes. On the way to the party, he is in charge of his grandfather's gift. Even though it is only a card, his parents promise there is a surprise inside that Grandpa, his friend Sally, and Bones will like. When it comes time to open the presents, the card is missing, and it takes all of Bones's detective skills to save the day once again. With Newman's bright and cheerful illustrations throughout the easy-to-read and humorous text, Adler has once again created an enjoyable story.-Erika Qualls, Ela Area Public Library District, Lake Zurich, IL
