Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The fun-filled "Bones" series is sure to catch the attention of young readers who want amusing chapter books. As one of at least four in the series, this book is formatted with five short chapters which take Detective Bones and his friend, Not-Me Amy, through a day at school. The simple mystery centers on a cupcake missing from Amy's lunch. As Bones checks out clues, he also thinks back to the happenings of the day in order to put everything in perspective. This clever back-tracking allows readers to work on their analyzing skills while Bones does the same. The engaging story is told with short sentences and lively illustrations that hold clues to the mystery. The boy-girl friendship works well—so does the teacher-student relationship. Author Adler also pens the popular Cam Jansen books. His experience with this type of tale is evident. Put this book and others in libraries and classrooms used by students who are ready to read chapter books. 2005, Penguin Group/Viking, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2-Detective Jeffrey Bones appears in his third story. Here, he is intrigued when fellow classmate Not-Me Amy loses her spinach-noodle cupcake. Although he wants to use his specialized equipment (code breaker, detective dust, and walkie-talkie) to solve the mystery, he finds that he can locate the cupcake using pure deduction. Divided into short chapters, the book consists of simple sentences and delightful color illustrations featuring amusing facial expressions. The dialogue makes the plot move quickly, and emerging readers will easily become involved. Adler's fine characterizations and evident sense of humor make this a solid addition to beginning-reader collections.-Anne Knickerbocker, formerly at Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
