Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this title in the "Bones" easy reader series, young detective Jeffrey Bones solves a mystery featuring another kind of "bones" when he visits the dinosaur exhibit at the science museum. First he cannot find Grandpa and Grandpa's lady friend, Sally; then his own little, blue plastic T-Rex, purchased at the museum gift shop, goes missing. Adler creates perfect kid-sized mysteries, with just the right level of difficulty and challenge for Jeffrey to tackle with his well-stocked detective kit and finely honed reasoning skills. Newman's colorful art allows readers to join in the fun of sleuthing. For example, they are able to spot Grandpa and Sally before Jeffrey does, and they can try to peer inside the depths of Sally's large green gift bag, which just might be hiding a small kidnapped dinosaur. The brightly attired museum-goers span different races and ethnicities, and it is a nice non-traditional touch to show Grandpa's affectionate, comfortable relationship with white-haired Sally. A sweet and satisfying selection. 2005, Viking, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2-In this fourth Jeffrey Bones mystery, the young detective visits the museum with his grandpa and Grandpa's friend Sally. They explore the dinosaur exhibit and then move on to the gift shop, where Grandpa buys Jeffrey a blue plastic T-rex. After a snack, they go to the moon exhibit, where the boy realizes that he no longer has his dinosaur. The plot and narration are simple and straightforward, and attentive children will find it easy to solve the mystery of the missing toy. Bones is a junior parallel to Adler's Cam Jansen but without the photographic memory. He is reminiscent of Nate the Great and, similarly, he narrates his own tale. Appealing cartoon caricatures are colorful and infused with humorous details like funky clothing, groovy glasses, and exaggerated expressions. A good choice for beefing up beginning-reader sections.-Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
