Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Adler of "Cam Jansen" fame has a new detective, a boy nicknamed Bones. Bones is not happy about having to take a math test. He would rather be writing the letters of his name. He also did not study for the test and decides to just write down a bunch of number. His teacher seems to be a bit absent-minded, and Bones comes to the rescue when he loses his glasses and other things. This time though, Bones' math test has gone missing. Mr. Gale has passed out materials for kids to make Thanksgiving cards to everyone but, because he will have to take the test over again, Bones decides to use logic to figure out where his test might be, because he knows that he did turn it in. The test is not stuck to another paper as he first surmises, but it is hidden in a very unusual place. Once found, Bones has a chance to look at his test and knows that the answers are wrong, so he asks to take it over. He wants to get an excellent grade just like his classmates. Simple sentences and plenty of visual clues will help young readers through this early reader. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal

Gr 1-2- Detective Bones is back in his sixth beginning-reader mystery. He loves writing the letter "J" (his first name is Jeffrey) and he hates math tests. While taking one, he struggles through what may be termed a numerical panic attack and just writes down numbers. His exam, however, is missing, and his teacher asks him to take it again. Putting on his detective hat, Bones eventually solves the puzzle of how it disappeared and opts to retake the test now that he can think clearly about addition. Expressive color cartoon illustrations on each spread support the easy text. Bones's many fans will enjoy watching him put his detective skills to work once again, and newcomers will also be caught up in the case.-Linda M. Kenton, San Rafael Public Library, CA
