More About This Book

Overview

Shepherd's Notes- Christian Classics Series is designed to give readers a quick, step by step overview of some of the enduring treasures of the Christian faith. They are designed to be used along side the classic itself- either in individual study or in a study group. The faithful of all generations have found spiritual nourishment in the Scriptures and in the works of Christians of earlier generations. Martin Luther and John Calvin would not have become who they were apart from their reading Augustine. God used the writings of Martin Luther to move John Wesley from a religion of dead works to an experience at Aldersgate in which his "heart was strangely warmed." Shepherd's Notes will give pastors, laypersons, and students access to some of the treasures of Christian faith.

    cliffnotes for theology

This is Bonhoeffer condensed and simplified. If you are reading this for a class or an assignment and need quick references or concepts this is a good book. It leaves the basic ideas intact, though it brushes over many details. C'mon, you used Cliffnotes in high school...its a cheat book when your pressed to read the book! Otherwise, read the book in its entirety and struggle with the material...it is a great book for Christians and those who really don't get what Christianity should be.

    Not Recommended

I was very disappointed with this purchase. I thought I was buying the book itself, and instead it is a study guide for the book. Probably my mistake, but disappointed nevertheless.

    A Good Overview

I wanted something that made Bonhoeffer's text more approachable. The book did a good job describing the context in which the book was written, and a good job summarizing the primary points in the book. I found that it was a little shorter than I wanted, but I'll just have to read the real book now :)

    Uncompromising Call for All Christians

This book is a true Christian masterpiece that every Christian should read and reflect upon. It is staggering in its theological depth, yet sounding as clear as the clarion - the call to true discipleship: one that involves costly grace - 'costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life.' Bonhoeffer's matyrdom by the Nazi regime because of his faith and civic actions serves to add weight to his teachings. Bonhoeffer lived the life of costly grace.

    The Cost of Descipleship

The book is very interesting but contains a high amount of theology. It is very entertaining but takes a lot of thought to fully understand what he refers to. Detrick lead a very interesting life and wrote books while he was in prison. so if you liked this book there are others about his life and the time during the holocaust.
