Chapter One

"Cool!" yelled Tyler.

"It's about time," mumbled Rosa.

"Bye-bye, Brainy Bones," called Lee.

Ms. Grumble had just announced to the class, "Today is Bonita Bones' last day in Smallville. She'll be moving to the town of Oakbrook."

Bonita hung her head when the children clapped. Tears streamed down her face. Some of the children made cruel comments while others just laughed. But this was nothing new.

School was dismissed and Bonita sat alone for the last time on the bus. She dreamed of making friends at the new school in Oakbrook as she stared out the window.

As the bus reached her corner for the last time, Bonita walked off.

"Good riddance and don't come back," shouted Tyler. Again the children cheered and laughed. When Bonita got home, she ran into her mother's loving arms.

Mama Bones could feel Bonita trembling and gently wiped the tears from her face. Bonita didn't have to say anything, Mama already knew.

Meanwhile, excitement was building in room 205 at Oakbrook School. Tomorrow would be Halloween and Miss Winthrop was ready to make her announcement.

Shhh, shhh, shhh. A hush fell over the room. Miss Winthrop stood. "First, tomorrow we will be having a new student. Her name is Bonita Bones. She is moving here from Smallville. Also, I have a special treat for you, so wear your costumes and get ready for some Halloween fun!"

Briiiiing! The bell rang and the children were dismissed. As the children walked out into the crisp fall air, they wondered what Miss Winthrop's surprise would be.

Their feet quickened as they sped past 402 Tombstone Way. The children couldn't remember anyone ever living in the creepy old house across from Screaming Skulls Cemetery.

The children always shuddered as they passed the old house. The lights in the windows always flickered, casting ghostly shadows. Bats flew overhead. Strange spooky sounds were heard. Chains rattled. Shutters banged. Moans were heard from inside the house. A black cat sat on the windowsill. There was even an old legend that said the tall weeds just beyond the gate had magic powers to grab anyone who dare come too near.

As the children were passing the vacant old house, a moving van pulled up right in front. Although the children were curious about who would want to live there, they rushed home to get their costumes ready for the Halloween surprise.
