Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Clean, crisp illustrations explicate the laws of color in the latest of a series of art books for young readers by Gonyea (A Book About Design: Complicated Doesn't Make It Good). Gonyea lays out basic color information—primary and secondary colors, their connotations, how they work together, and so on—with simple, accessible statements and corresponding visual representations (“Blue and red make purple” appears in white against a solid purple backdrop opposite horizontal red and blue stripes; “Warm colors rise to the front” is demonstrated by a stylized red rocket flying across a sky of blue). Older readers will appreciate the book's second half, which presents more complex ideas. The tone loosens up, too: “Saturation is the amount of color in... well... color;” “Darker values have more black and can make things seem creepy and menacing.” It is in essence a handbook, the illustrations more like diagrams than images to savor. Young artists (and that might include young designers of Web pages and video games) will learn new things, and may recognize the truth of perceptions they already had. Ages 9-up. (Apr.)
Children's Literature
Come for a visit on Color Street. The bigger houses are red, yellow and blue, and are the primary colors. The smaller houses are orange, green and purple and are secondary colors. Using clever graphics and simple language, Gonyea explains color relationships and terms. He covers the meanings of colors, the visual effect of combining warm and cool colors, complementary and analogous colors, color saturation and values, and ends with the color houses (which look like upward arrows) morphing into the color wheel. The final two-page spread brings together the geometrically shaped drawings from each chapter. Dramatic design and direct and clear explanations make the concepts so easy to understand. Art teachers will want to use this in their classes. Parents will enjoy sharing it with their children. It would be a fine addition in a story hour on color for primary grade children. Gonyea succeeds in presenting what he promises in the subtitle. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
School Library Journal
Gr 1–5—"Welcome to the Neighborhood" begins this introduction to color theory. Information is divided into seven short chapters, beginning on Color Street where six houses shaped like upward-pointing arrows pop out against a black-and-white background. Primary colors are introduced, and the resulting secondary colors are explained in white text on bright solid-colored pages. Next, monochromatic illustrations accompany simple ideas associated with each color ("Blue is calm. Blue is wet."). Properties such as warmth, saturation, and value are presented with clarity. Finally, the houses on Color Street turn to form the familiar shape of a color wheel, bringing this explanation full circle. While books ranging from Kathleen Westray's A Color Sampler (Houghton, 1993) to Etienne Delessert's Full Color (Creative Editions, 2008) cover similar material, there is still something uniquely appealing about Gonyea's treatment that makes this introduction to color a primary selection.—Lisa Glasscock, Columbine Public Library, Littleton, CO
Kirkus Reviews
This shiny, cheerful lesson has mixed success conveying concepts. Well-chosen subject matter includes definitions, color mixing and color vibes. Unfortunately, the arbitrary organization calls each hue a "house" on "Color Street," making the spectrum linear rather than circular. (A color wheel appears only at the end.) Hue implications are intriguing ("Red is loving. / Red is dangerous. / Orange is cheerful. / Orange is powerful"), but low value gets the shaft ("Darker values have more black and can make things seem creepy and menacing"-yes, sometimes, but what about cozy Goodnight Moon?). The text clearly explains mixing primaries to create secondaries, but large, blocky cut-paper-style digital shapes don't show blending the way paint-or digital images chipped into smaller bits-could have. Most egregious is an error defining complementary colors as the primary and secondary that "work well together... / [l]ike" Christmas's red and green; that's the common-usage definition of "complementary," whereas the technical art term "complementary" means sitting opposite on the color wheel and creating a neutral gray/brown when mixed. Bright, glossy and flawed; excellent idea, less-than-excellent execution. (Informational picture book. 6-10)
