Editorial Reviews

The New York Times
As an author, too, Ms. Pearl is primarily a librarian. Book Lust is a frank, pleasant read...but the meat of the matter is the recommendations.—Claire Dederer
Library Journal
For librarians who read (and many of them do not), the most enjoyable aspect of work has often been the opportunity to provide a readers' advisory service: to read, examine, and literally digest reams of books in the pursuit of finding the perfect title to recommend to an enthusiastic, dedicated reader. In Book Lust, Pearl (Washington Ctr. for the Book), a longtime LJ reviewer, has distilled hours and weeks of reading into recommendations for others. The titles, arranged by categories, will most likely be appreciated by readers whose interests coincide with Pearl's, as some categories have more suggestions than others. For the most part, these categories do not contain "expected" titles such as the "classics," heavily publicized works, or books made into TV movies; instead, they are individualistic recommendations from a voracious reader. For another perspective-that of authors themselves-one might consult Ronald B. Shwartz's For the Love of Books: 115 Celebrated Writers on the Books They Love Most. For other personalized lists like Pearl's, look to Colin Wilson's The Books in My Life; for more specific titles, check out Clive Bloom's Bestsellers: Popular Fiction Since 1900. For all public libraries.-Marilyn Lary, Stewart Lib., Dahlonega, GA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    not detailed enough...

This is a good book for those readers who are looking for some recommendations on what to read. Nancy Pearl has her recommendations broken down into different categories according to topics, her favorite authors and moods. I have not read most of the books she suggests but I found a handful that I want to read in the near future. She doesn't go into detail on many of the books as to what the book is about. She may say it's about mother-daughter relationships or something vague. Needless to say, I was on the computer looking up a more detailed description of some of these books. I also noticed that I frequently ran across the same book title in several different places in Book Lust. Pearl might list the same book in Mexican Fiction and First Novels for example. It got a little redundant for me but I understand Book Lust is probably not meant to be read from cover to cover like I did. If you are looking for some ideas on what to read, Book Lust could be helpful.

    Not worth buying...

It's hard to describe why I don't like this book. The reading suggestions are quiet boring and I just couldn't find much that interested me. The layout of the book isn't very good. It should have been divided into "mood, moment, and reason" like the cover says, but instead I found strangely organized list. I just don't think this is a great book. I will however recommend a much better book below :)

    A tad bit overrated

This book does not live up to it's hype. The book is thorough in that it has nearly a 100 different genres of reading featured, but the book is a mere list, or has just a few sentences to describe each book. I had better luck finding great books to read off of her online archive of book reviews for her Seattle weekly book talk.

    Fantastic!

This book is not only a wonderful source of information, but also contains the author's pearls of wisdom (pun intended, sorry) about reading. One tidbit (stop after 50 pages if you really aren't enjoying it) has saved me from many a wasted evening with the bad, the dull, and the tedious. Thanks!
