She now lives in Kansas City, Missouri, with her husband, Jeff (also an inspiration!), and her dogs, George (who was kicked out of obedience school) and Roxy."

Inspired by her childhood (with four brothers and sisters), Beith has collected some of the most familiar and outrageous good ideas that have gone bad. After a sweet introduction which leads into the bad ideas, the reader is treated to fantastic illustrations of acrylic, collage paper, and fabric that burst with personality. Vibrant colors and many patterns fill the pages that depict the horribly bad ideas. The pictures have an abstract quality to them that makes the book modern and fun. Details such as plaid houses and cars and handwritten text add to the charm.

First time author-illustrator Huliska-Beith is so sure that every youngster hatches such plans as "bringing home a cute, cuddly, stray animal" or "jumping off the high dive to show off your itsy-bitsy bathing suit" that she relishes listing good ideas gone bad (in no particular order) from her own childhood in this playfully wacky picture book. From "Bad Idea #98: Cramming something into a tight space without knowing if you can get it back out" (she pictures a child with a goldfish bowl on his head, another with a lima bean up his nose) to "Bad Idea #828: Throwing a surprise party for your imaginary friend," Huliska-Beith's wry look at such simultaneously embarrassing and hilarious moments will have readers cracking up. A crew of kids, parents, pets and innocent bystanders cavorts across the high-energy spreads, each scene a comic melange of acrylic paint, fabric and cut-paper collage. Keeping your lip balm and your glue stick in the same pocket? Bad idea! Allowing your friend to cut your hair right before class pictures are taken? Bad idea. Want to be embarrassed? Jump off the high diving board in your brand new itsy-bitsy bikini bathing suit. This book is full of ideas for calamities and disasters. Some, like saving your chewed gum for after lunch, may seem practical but, when you forget where you park the gum¾well, that's the recipe for a sticky dilemma. Some of the ideas are bad at the outset, such as using the oven as a garage for your toy truck or using parts from your Dad's new stereo to create an intergalactic communication device. Others are just silly. Does anyone actually have a friend who could bring a pet porcupine to a birthday party? Huliska-Beith has compiled a list of "bad ideas" and through her humorous artwork shows the sometimes embarrassing, sometimes catastrophic results of putting them into practice. Readers can envision bad idea #11: "Jumping off the high dive to show off your new itsy-bitsy bathing suit." The illustration shows a red-faced girl in the pool with her bikini top floating nearby while the other swimmers look on in amusement. Other bad ideas include in-line skating with your disobedient dog, taking an ice-cream cone on a roller coaster, sticking something up your nose, and "parking your toy truck in the oven." The colorful full-spread drawings are done in a combination of acrylic paint and collage. There is much going on behind the scenes in these pictures and children will want to read through the book again to see what they missed the first time. This is a great read-aloud, after which listeners are sure to have some ideas of their own to relate (hopefully they won't get any from this book). Illustrator HuliskaBeith's solo authorial debut is a book that will speak to the personal experience of every reader, even one who has not: parked chewing gum for later, then forgotten where (Bad Idea #14); used parts from the stereo to create an Intergalactic Communication Device (Bad Idea #462); kept glue stick and lip balm in the same pocket (#101); or asked a friend for a quick haircut on classpicture day (#239). Saturated colors and canted perspectives give each paint and collage scene a zany energy à la David Shannon's No, David! (1998). With just 17 actual examples, some sillier than others, this only scratches the surface, but is guaranteed to engender both laughs of recognition and plenty of additional faux pas. It wouldn't be a bad idea at all to share it with young people prone to lapses of judgment. The handlettered text is curly but legible and the cartoony doublepage spreads are full of goofy details to study. Good Idea #1. (Picture book. 58)
