Hardcover New The Book of Churchilliana is much more than just a tribute to Winston Churchill. Alongside a definitive collection of memorabilia, Douglas Hall provides the ... reader with a unique historical view on the man whose abiding image for millions is that of the indomitable bulldog with his world-famous v-sign and trademark cigar the inspiring leader who masterminded the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. It is almost impossible to do justice to the many different facets of this truly remarkable individual. As a soldier and politician who excelled as an artist and Nobel prize-winning author his qualities have been celebrated by the nation for years. As a result, memorabilia in the form of portraits, ceramics and all manner of accessories have never waned in popularity and have come to be known as Churchilliana. Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The downside of world fame is surely its attendant kitsch industry, which, in Winston Churchill's case, remains vibrant 38 years after his death. Hall's thematic collection of more than 100 categories of Churchill memorabilia is featured here from A to Z. In a few moments, aficionados can leaf through a spectacular gallimaufry of Churchilliana ashtrays, badges, biscuit tins, calendars, cigars, figurines, glassware, matchbox covers, postage stamps, toby jugs, and the like, manufactured and collected from around the world. Tips on collecting (interestingly, Churchill-related material in the United States costs about three times more than in Britain), photographs, quotations, and cartoons are interspersed with Churchill merchandise and effigies. While obviously a touchstone for collectors at every level, this purchase is difficult to justify for libraries. In its favor are high-quality reproductions, heavy paper, exquisite layout, episodic historical sections, fairly extensive primary and secondary book bibliographies, and thorough indexing. Still, this will likely be an intriguing pass except for comprehensive collectibles or Anglo history and political collections.-Russell T. Clement, Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
