Book of Days: '60s: A Day-by-Day Look at the Pop Culture Moments That Made History

( 4 )

Overview

The 1960s fused grassroots empowerment with psychedelia to form a countercultural revolution. Not surprisingly, it was an era teeming with pop culture milestones: Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hats, free love at Woodstock, Andy Warhol’s soup cans, and legions of frenzied teenagers infected with Beatlemania. Take a day-by-day journey through the unforgettable moments that shaped the decade’s films, television, books, music, fashion, and more, in Book of Days: ’60s.

  • January 1, 1962: A young group from Liverpool called The Beatles is turned down at their first record company audition.
  • February 28, 1967: Reclusive cartoonist R. Crumb and his pregnant wife, Dana, begin peddling the first copies of Zap Comix out of a baby stroller.
  • May 25, 1969: Dustin Hoffman yells, “I’m walkin’ here!” at a cabbie in the X-rated Midnight Cowboy.
  • September 7, 1968: A crowd of feminists pickets the Miss America pageant for “degrading mindless boob-girlies” (as one protestor’s sign reads).
  • December 6, 1964: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the story of an ostracized reindeer and an elf who wants to become a dentist, debuts on General Electric’s Fantasy Theater.

Includes a CD of hits from the decade!

    Great reads!

I just had to tell you all about one of my favorite Christmas presents. I got both of Rich's Book of Days of Pop Culture. The ones for the 60's and the 70's. And they are amazingly fun. I have completely read the one for the 60's from front to back. I learned a ton of stuff that I didn't know before plus even though I was pretty young during this decade it brought back alot of memories.

Perhaps the thing that I found most interesting was the dramatic difference between life in the early 60's compared to life at the end of the sixties. It truly was a revolutionary period in the history of our culture as well as our government. I'm sure that over the course of history this has happened before but off the top of my head I can't think of a decade where things changed so dramatically.

If anyone is interested in pop culture or has lived through and/or has interest in these periods I can personally recommend these books. They are well worth the money. If I wouldn't have gotten them as gift I would have bought them for myself.

    I Also Recommend:

    Very Groovy Book...

I had bought this book as a gift for a friend's son who is enamoured with the "sixties"; and found that I couldn't put it down myself! I grew up in the sixties and this book brought back many memories and brought to mind lots of things I'd either long forgotten or had not known....so it was not only a great and enjoyable read; I learned from it as well. And, I couldn't believe that there was a CD included with music from "the day"! An amazing book to begin with; but for the price I'd have to say that it was extraordinary! An excellent gift; a great coffee table book; an easy read and real joy and break from the day-to-day grind! "Far out"! You will absolutely "dig it"!
