Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Princess Cimarone from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles reappears in this collection of 10 lighthearted fantasy stories, along with unicorns, werewolves and the Frying Pan of Doom. Ages 12-up. (Jan.)r
The ALAN Review - Anne Shaughnessy
In this first collection of enchanted tales, Wrede provides high entertainment for readers by giving amusing and witty twists to the conventions of fantasy. Among these are step-sisters who are neither jealous of each other nor despised by their step-mother, a prince charming who needs an old woodcutter to kiss awake a sleeping beauty, and a charmed kitchen implement which, when held in the right hands, becomes the Frying Pan of Doom. Fantasy's more somber themes are skillfully explored in two retold tales when Wrede changes the point of view. To an old Scottish folk song of fatal sibling rivalry, Wrede adds the perspective of a middle sister, and in retelling the story of the New Testament's prodigal, Wrede gives voice to the older and resentful sibling. This is a collection to delight fans of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles and certain to win Wrede new readers.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8This enjoyable fantasy collection is comprised of 10 stories that vary widely in tone and setting. Some are laced with humor, while others have melancholy overtones. Two tongue-in-cheek tales are set in the "Enchanted Forest" of the author's dragon series (Harcourt). One of these selections involves a thoroughly conceited unicorn; the other a weapon of great power, the frying pan of doom. "The Lorelei" offers a modern version of the German legend. Another takeoff on an old story gives readers a look at what would have happened to Sleeping Beauty's castle if the prince had failed to arrive on time. Each selection stands alone, but also seems as if it might belong to some longer tale as yet untold. A chapter of notes from the author concludes the book. While a few of the stories may have messages that are a bit too subtle for the intended audience, the volume as a whole should have high appeal for fantasy lovers and might lure some newcomers to the genre.Bruce Anne Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, NC
Kirkus Reviews
A collection of magical short stories by an author best known for her humorous Enchanted Forest Chronicles, in which spunky young heroines turn the knight-in-shining-armordamsel-in-distress paradigm on its head. Though mostly unrelated to the novels, stories such as "The Princess, the Cat, and the Unicorn" and "The Sixty-two Curses of Caliph Arenschadd" carry on the unconventional princess theme. The last story in particular, "Utensile Strength," involves familiar characters from Wrede's series and features a rousing "bake-off" for knights, with the recipe for the winning entry included. Other pieces dig deeper into the eerie world of magic and the imagination. "Stronger than Time" is a wonderfully spooky Sleeping Beauty story, and "Cruel Sisters" imagines the complex psychological relationships behind the lyrics of an old song, in which a magic harp sings of one sister's drowning another. "Roses by Moonlight" examines human nature and, along with "The Lorelei," starts off with a contemporary setting that intersects with the ancient world of magic. A thoughtful author's note answers the perennial question "Where do you get your ideas?" and closes out this varied and satisfying collection.

    Very funny and entertaining !

Read the first four in the set and them read this book. They are geared to kids, but I loved them and passed them on to my kids (age 29 and 31). They loved them too. They are just for fun and if you need an in between book, pick these up.

    Mixture of themes

Every story was well-written and entertaining, and the feeling they gave ranged from heartbreaking despair ('Stronger Than Time') to slapstick humor ('Utensile Strength'). It was all good if you like fantasy, there's something here to fit any mood you might be in.

    For Patricia C. Wrede Fans

Although I truly enjoy this book, I would not recommend it to someone who has not read any Patricia C. Wrede before, or to someone who has only read her Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Although it contains two light stories set in the Enchanted Forest and a few other lighter fantasy stories, the darker and melancholy works seem to linger longer. The stories are well-written, smooth, and in some cases surreal. This book is a must for the whole Patricia C. Wrede fan.
