Jane digs you so much that she buys you a book of Leonard Cohen's poetry, draws ... a little picture of herself and writes you a poem on the half-title, and less than a year later you give it to Goodwill? What a jerk! Otherwise near flawless. Bastard never even read it. Read more Show Less

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
"I tried to love you my way, / But I couldn't make it hold. / So closed the Book of Longing / And I do what I am told." Leonard Cohen's poignant book of poetry and artwork draws its title from his That Don't Make It Junk CD. As usual, the Canadian poet/singer/songwriter once described as "part wolf, part angel" exceeds every expectation. A little wild bouquet for all the beautiful losers.
LA Weekly
“. . .alive and contradictory. . . you should read the whole volume. . .”
New York Times
“Book of Longing has exceptional range. It is clear yet steamy, cosmic yet private, both playful and profound.”
Publishers Weekly
Renowned singer-songwriter Cohen also boasts a reputation as a writer for the printed page, especially in his native Canada. This capacious collection (his first since 1993's Stranger Music) compiles musings, jottings, quatrains, brief lyrics, prose meditations and offhand epigrams, along with Cohen's ink drawings and work in his own handwriting. The melancholy Cohen displays both a surface humility and an underlying self-confidence as he reflects on women (as when recalling his seduction of "the most beautiful girl/ on the religious left"), Zen doctrine, his own advancing age (Cohen turned 70 two years ago) and the legacy of the '60s. Many poems feel like his song lyrics: "Sometimes just a list/ Of my events/ Is holier than the Bill of Rights/ And more intense." The volume will get a boost from Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, a documentary scheduled for theatrical release. (May) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

The Book of Longing

I can't make the hills
The system is shot
I'm living on pills
For which I thank G-d

I followed the course
From chaos to art
Desire the horse
Depression the cart

I sailed like a swan
I sank like a rock
But time is long gone
Past my laughing stock

My page was too white
My ink was too thin
The day wouldn't write
What the night pencilled in

My animal howls
My angel's upset
But I'm not allowed
A trace of regret

For someone will use
What I couldn't be
My heart will be hers
Impersonally

She'll step on the path
She'll see what I mean
My will cut in half
And freedom between

For less than a second
Our lives will collide
The endless suspended
The door open wide

Then she will be born
To someone like you
What no one has done
She'll continue to do

I know she is coming
I know she will look
And that is the longing
And this is the book

Continues...

    I Also Recommend:

Song writer's poetic roots on display

A long time fan of Cohen's music it is still nice to see the poetic roots that make his imagry so compelling. I would recomend this to anyone who likes COhen, bob dylan, or TS Eliot
