Bernie Siegel first wrote about miracles when he was a practicing surgeon and founded Exceptional Cancer Patients, a groundbreaking synthesis of group, individual, dream, and art therapy that provided patients with a “carefrontation.” Compiled during his more than thirty years of practice, speaking, and teaching, the stories in these pages are riveting, warm, and belief expanding. Their subjects include a girl whose baby brother helped her overcome anorexia, a woman whose cancer helped her heal by teaching her to stand up for herself, and a family that was saved from a burning house by bats. Without diminishing the reality of pain and hardship, the stories show real people turning crisis into blessing by responding to adversity in ways that empower and heal. They demonstrate what we are capable of and show us that we can achieve miracles as we confront life’s difficulties.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

As a practicing surgeon, Dr. Bernie Siegel clearly recognized the crucial importance of medical intervention, but over time, he also came to understand and appreciate the power of spiritual healing. In his new book, the author of the bestselling Love, Medicine, and Miracles shares his most arresting accounts of recovery through individual, group, dream, and art therapy. As in his previous efforts, A Book of Miracles collects stories that lift the spirit without ignoring the hard realities of physical, psychological, and emotional challenges.

Publishers Weekly
Siegel sold millions of Love, Medicine, & Miracles (1986). Twenty-five years later, he, and miracles, are still around, and he offers a collection of short stories grouped into themed chapters (“Holiday Miracles,” “Animal Inspirations,” etc.) that recount miraculous moments—“God’s redirections”—that are not always healing moments. He draws from his own experiences as well as accounts others have shared with him and also comments on the stories. None of this is very deep, which is fine, but neither are these stories very persuasive or even comforting. They’re so brief and general as to feel generic and sentimental rather than authentically moving (“ grew with us and watched us to the end, always loving”). The chapter titled “Bernie as a Miracle” is over the adulatory edge. This may well have an audience among people who don’t know what to say or do when someone they know is gravely ill. But it’s disappointing. (Sept.)
From the Publisher

“As these stories show, love and magic can find us in any situation, no matter how difficult. This warm, uplifting book opens the door to seeing the miracles that are happening all around us, every day.”
— Gerald Jampolsky, MD, author of Love Is Letting Go of Fear

“These inspiring true stories reveal the power of spirit in shaping human lives. A Book of Miracles is a must for anyone who considers their situation in life to be hopeless or who is struggling against great odds.”
— Larry Dossey, MD, author of Reinventing Medicine and The Power of Premonitions

“A call to take an evolutionary leap not through some kind of automatic unfoldment but by using conscious choice. Love, intelligence, and creativity are seeds waiting to be touched and awakened. The more you touch them, the more they flourish.”
— Deepak Chopra, from the foreword

    highly recommended

I picked this book by its cover. Anything written about miracles always gets my attention simply for the inspiration and joy I get from reading about them. Thankfully, A Book of Miracles delivers. You may remember Dr. Bernie Siegel for his book, Love, Medicine & Miracles. Dr. Siegel is a surgeon who over the years has witnessed healing miracles among many terminally ill patients. Whether they are self created, God created or the family pet created, they are all miracles. His latest book is filled with stories about people recovering from life threatening diseases, often including immense attitude and perception changes as well as miracles of all shapes and sizes. It’s a testament to the human mind/body connection and our ability to create our own health.
