The spiritual text that forms the basis of Mormonism—in the last edition edited by its founder, Joseph Smith, Jr.
THE BOOK OF MORMON is one of the most influential— as well as controversial—religious documents in American history, and is regarded as sacred scripture by followers around the world, including members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the fourth-largest religious body in the United States. According to Mormon belief, The Book of Mormon was inscribed on golden plates by ancient prophets. I t contains stories of ancient peoples migrating from the Near East to the Americas, and also explains that Jesus Christ appeared to the New World after his resurrection. The golden plates were discovered in upstate New York and translated by Joseph Smith, Jr., under the guidance of an angel, Moroni. From this divine revelation, Smith founded the Mormon sect, which is now comprised of more than 12.5 million members worldwide.

Ok, well. I myself am not of the Mormon religion, but a girl I am courting is. And I did go out to a school in Utah which was run by Mormons. Let me start off by saying, they do get a bad rap.
The generalization of Mormon being a cult is repulsive to me. And I was ignorent to the religion myself at one point, but being the type of person who tries to better understand things he does not understand, and not continuing my ignorence, I picked up a copy of The Book Of Mormon.
Although I have not read through all of it, what I did read was enough to allow me more incite into the religion. It is a very true religion. Based of the same basic principals as any religion. Sure, there are some differences, but then again, so does every other religion.
Being a child brought up in a house with no strong hold on any religion, I have always been the type to look for enlightenment in any place that I can find it, and thus far, I have found alot within the Mormon religion.
So, instead of bashing something because you simply don't know anything about it, or because you don't like something that is different than what you expect, stop, go to your library, and read the book. Understanding the religion is alot more productive than going against what is different.

Let me start off by saying that I LOVE THE BOOK OF MORMON! My rating is not about the book! My rating is about the navigation in the Nook. For this edition of the Book of Mormon, there are no chapters under "go to chapter". Therefore, the only way to move around in the book is to page forward page by page. This is fine if you are planning to read it from front to back. Unfortunately, I want to be able to skip around in this book, so I will be looking for a different copy. There are many editions available, I'm hoping to find the right one, but don't waste your money on this one!

This is a digital download, not a scan. There are too many typo's. It is not accurate at all and isn't correct. It may be free, but not at all worth your time to download.

Written between 1828 and 1830, Joseph Smith took a then popular belief (that the Mound Builders of the eastern and midwestern US had been displaced Israelites)and constructed an ancient thousand year 'history' of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Through this 'hsitory' he debated the most controversial theological issues of the Second Great Awakening (the evangelical Christian movement of the 1810s and 1820's.) These issues included the Divinty of Christ (Smith accepted the doctrine of the Trinity when he wrote the book; by the end of his career he rejected not only the Trinity but monotheism itself), Original Sin, infant baptism, the relationship of republican government to the established churches and even Freemasonry (which in the book he referred to as "Secret Combinations"), anti-semiticism (he rejected it), Biblical infallibility (he rejected this also) and, most importantly, the role of Native Americans in teh future of the United States.
The book was privately published in Palmyra, New York in the Spring of 1830, but sales were so poor that Martin Harris (who paid for the publishing) completely lost his investment. Nevertheless, the few copies that were circulated deeply impacted religous seekers of the day.
In late 1830 an entire community of Christian Primitivists in Kirtland, Ohio, under the leadership of Christian restorationist minister Sydney Rigdon, accepted the book as scripture. Joseph Smith and his scribe, Oliver Cowdrey, movwed the dozen or so families who belonged to their local congegation, The Chruch of Christ, to Kirtland, Ohio.
Joining forces with Sydney Rigdon, Joseph Smith established a seminary (called the School of the Prophets), began studying theology and developing new doctrines that would alter Mormonism, turning it into a new American religion--as different from Christianity as Christianity is different from Judaism.
THIS EDITION of "The Book of Mormon" is the verison published by the Utah LDS Church (the largest, but NOT the only Mormon denomination.) The modern subtitled "Another Testament of Christ" was created by the Utah LDS Church in 1983 in that church's attempt to transform itself into a more mainstream Christian denomination. THIS EDITION also contains over a century of rewrites and word changes, many of which change the meaning of the text as originally published. The most drastic changes involve changing references to race and skin color by substituting the words "pure" for the word "white."
"The Book of Mormon" was not reprinted until the 1840's, and was NOT used as the basis of Mormonism's more profound and innovative doctrines. In fact, until the early 1980's when the subtitle "Another Testament of Christ" was added by the LDS Church, Joseph Smith's LATER writings were the ones that LDS Church members studied the most.
Rather than reading this edition, I would recommend that you read the ediiton recommended below--which is a reprint of the 1840 ediiton.
ALSO check out the recent-award winning bioraphy of Joseph Smith by Dan Vogel (recommended below) entitled "Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet." This book goes through "The Book of Mormon" exploring what Joseph Smith was dealing with in his personal life, day by day and week by week, as he wrote each chapter.

READ THE BOOK!!!!!!! I know so many people who had their lives completely changed because they decided to read this book with an open mind because they honestly wanted to know if the Church is true. If you don't believe this book, I can only say that someone is very sad you won'r accept the truth.

This is a copy from Cornell University's library that was converted to ebook, but in the conversion much of the text is jumbled and illegible. You'd be better off trying a different version.

Rating is based on how easy it is to use on an I-Pod touch with the Nook app.
It is useless.
Unless you want to read the book cover to cover.

Anyone who claims to be a student or scholar of Christianity will want to read this book. At a time when so many scholars are second guessing biblical sources and meanings, it is refreshing to have another source that reaffirms the basic truths and fundamentals of Christian faith. The print format makes reading and analysis easy and enjoyable. This is a must read for any serious student of Jesus Christ and his teachings.

This is a book filled with profound, prophetic insights about Jesus Christ, his Atonement, his eternal mission, his status as the Creator and Redeemer of all mankind. Anyone who wants to know Him better--or who desires to know if He lives--should read this book thoughtfully and carefully. It confirms the Bible and add to our understanding of Jesus Christ in myriad ways. I testify of its truthfulness.

I am one of the millions of Christian people from every part of the world who has read this book with an open mind and heart and has felt the truth within me. The book contains a challenge to its readers that as they read and contemplate the sublime truths, that they need only to ask God for themselves if the book is true. The book teaches us to be more charitable and loving. The first time I read the book, I noticed that I felt closer to my family and to God. I have also read the Old and New Testaments and I can tell you that this book will change your life. As you apply the teachings of this book and strive to improve your life you too may know why many people have sacrificed everything in their possession and even their lives in some cases in order to bring this book to the world.

This book presents the story of a family who left Jeursalem for the American continent about the time of Jerimiah in the Bible. It follows the descendants of that familiy for about a thousand years. It was translated into language similar to that of the King James Translation of the Bible which makes following the story challenging, but worth the struggle. I strongly recommend pen and paper for keeping track of the characters. If you are reading it as a story, skip the section entitled 2 Nephi after the fourth chapter. The message of the book relates to how Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and how following His teaching brings blessings. For Christians looking for a way to better understand how to draw nearer to Christ, this book provides practical solutions. For anyone looking for meaning in their lives, this book provides a unique challenge, 'And when ye shall recieve these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost. (pg 520)' I have met this challenge and it has brought peace and meaning to my life. I am a better person, a better wife, and a better friend because of the teachings of this book.
