A huge success with over 700,000 copies sold, The Book of Runes has proved itself to be a modern classic. For this, the tenth anniversary of the work, Ralph H. Blum has expanded and refined the runic system, making the Runes the most profoundly useful self-help tool of our era.

    Absolute Rubish

This is an absolutely terrible treatment of the runes. By his own admission, Blum's knowledge of the runes comes from a single sheet of paper that came with a rune set he purchased on a trip. Based on this very superficial understanding, Blum has constructed an oracle that is in many places completely contrary to traditional rune lore. For instance, he interprets Othila as separation when its traditional meaning is about inheritance and establishing ties to the past. Either Blum is entirely unaware of traditional rune lore or he doesn't care. How else can his random arrangement of the runes be explained? The traditional futhark arrangement serves a purpose and reveals deeper numerological, cosmological and psychological meanings to the runes that Blum completely discards. As if this weren't bad enough, he has added a 25th rune that serves no purpose whatsoever and seriously alters the balance of the Elder Futhark. In short, there is nothing in this book that should be trusted. Anyone interested in learning the runes would be far better served by authors such as Edred Thorsson, Freya Aswynn, Nigel Pennick and even Donald Tysson.

    accessible and shockingly accurate

I'm aware of the criticisms and outright hostilities many traditionalists have about Blum's work. I'd be sceptical too if he wasn't so accurate. Much of modern Wicca is also just recently 'discovered,' but that doesn't mean some of it isn't real. Blum's work is a great tool to help you connect with your spiritual side. I highly recommend it.

    It Works!

Blum's runes have never let me down. I have always received the answer I needed. I bought my first set from Ralph at his seminar on how to use them. Since then I have introduced them to many friends who have also found them a great source of spiritual guidance in personal affairs.

    Inaccurate and Too 'Fluffy'

I used this book for some time, and it was the only access to rune meanings that (I thought) I had at the time. I started to get tired of the fact that just about every description of each rune said something about a 'New Beginning'. New beginnings aren't appropriate to every situation, so I started to do my own research on the internet. I soon discovered that the meanings employed in this book are NOT the traditional meanings. The author seems to have made most of these up, and the few that are based on fact, he has polished them up so that every answer is 'Yes' and every outcome is good. I may as well have one of those magic 8-balls, only buy one that always says, 'Most Likely'. This title does come with a nice rune set which I still use. I have, however, removed the 'blank' rune, which was not a part of the traditional Norse runeset. But was it worth $25? No.

Excellent for Personal Growth and Guidance

I love this book...the explanation of the stones and their use is terrific, and the description of each stone is the most detailed I've seen so far...and I've looked at LOTS of Rune sets.
