Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This delectably dark pair of novels, first in the Sweep series, brings a supernatural spin to classic teen issues--popularity, romance, alienation and the search for self. Narrator Morgan, a high school junior in upstate New York, feels plain and ordinary, especially next to her flirty, drop-dead-gorgeous friend Bree. When Cal, a remarkably poised and handsome senior, transfers to their school, Morgan likes him almost immediately, an attraction she hides when Bree announces that she plans to win him for herself. Cal makes no secret of his belief in Wicca, inviting most of the junior and senior classes to join him in a Wiccan celebration. The rituals powerfully affect Morgan--could it be that she, like Cal, is a "blood witch" (a descendant of one of the seven great witch clans)? But how could she be a blood witch when everyone else in her family is so clearly not "magickal"? While Tiernan's ingredients are familiar, she stirs the cauldron with engaging, even cinematic, prose and sharply individuates her characters. She introduces the Wiccan material with some depth as well as with a skillful degree of ambiguity; readers will not know immediately whether or not the series embraces Wicca. Both books end on cliffhangers (Shadows, for example, closes as Cal kisses Morgan, in full view of Bree and the rest of their newly formed coven), fanning what will surely be an already keen desire to learn the whole story. Ages 12-up. (Jan.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
The search for identity is an issue all young adults seem to find themselves tangled in, and sixteen-year old Morgan Rowlands is no different. Young Morgan has noticed that she is not the prettiest girl, like her friend Bree, and she is definitely not among the smartest, like some of her other friends. In fact, Morgan is downright confused about where she belongs in her life, until she meets the one guy who ever really treated her like she mattered, Cal Blaire. The only problem is that Cal is involved in an ancient religion: Wicca. This revelation comes as exciting news to Morgan, until she finds herself in a Wiccan circle for the holiday of Mabon. It all seems like innocent fun until Morgan is swept off her feet by some uncontrollable power during the circle. All of a sudden, Morgan wonders, "Was this phenomena the result of the power of Wicca streaming inside her?" "And has Morgan finally found where she belongs, or will her families' Catholic background drive her away from this strange religion?" This novel is an intriguing read about a young, vulnerable teenager who finds herself drawn to a "strange phenomena," that raises more questions than it gives answers. 2001, Puffin Books, 192 pp.,

Book of Shadows opened me up to Wicca. This book changed me! Morgan is such a normal girl with normal issues, its refreshing to see something amazing happen to her. The Wiccan details are pretty accurate in this book which is nice, it gives it a positive view.

I initially started looking for a book that my daughter could ready during the summer... that was a series. It turned out, that I started reading the book... and could barely put it down! I was more than surprised and was only disappointed because the story would not continue until I purchased the next book in the series (which was the next day). I really enjoy reading this series and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a Twilight fan.

Cal Blaire is a gorgous senior who is new to Morgan Rowlands's school. Cal introduces Wicca to Morgan and her best friend, Bree, and other students. He asks them to join his coven and when they go to their first circle, things happen to Morgan that doesn't happen to anyone else. She see things and hear things in a different way. She finds that she can do powerful things. Magickal things. Both Morgan and Bree are not only interested in Wicca but they both seem to be falling for Cal. Will they let Cal tear them apart? Will they continue to practice Wicca? Will best friends become enemies? I first received this book from a past teacher and she gave it to me as a Christmas present. When I finished this book, I begged her to give me the rest of the series. Book of Shadows will leave you wanting more.

Morgan Rowlands is a normal teenage girl. She gets good grades, hangs out with her friends, and goes to church with her family on Sundays. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happens to her... until she meets Cal Blaire.

Cal is the new cute senior who has just transferred to Widow's Vale High. His looks aren't the only thing that sets him apart from other boys. He's Wiccan, a different religion than Morgan and one that she has never come into contact with before.

Something about Cal and his religion interests Morgan and her best friends, Bree and Robbie. The more they hang out with Cal, the more they like him. While with Cal, Morgan learns something about herself that completely blows her mind -- and may change her life forever.

This book was fun to read. The story was great and you learn a thing or two about Wicca as you read it (it's not scary!). BOOK OF SHADOWS is the first of 14 books, plus a super edition novel, so this is only the start of Morgan and Cal's adventures.

I am a Christian and do not believe in Wicca or any kind of magic, but I do like to learn about it! I've read a lot of these books for fun, I actually found the books by accident! I was looking for a new series. When I first got it, I read the whole thing in one day and had to BEG my mom to take me to B & N to buy more! I highly recommend it, even if you don't believe in Wicca(like me) it gives you a lot of history on it and just because you read a book about Wicca doesn't make you Wiccan!

I loved this book. I am 14 and I think this book would be great for kids my age, older, and younger. Cate Tiernan is a magnificent writer who knows how to communicate thoughts, feelings, expressions, descriptions, etc. effectively to all ages. This book changed my whole perspective on the religion, Wicca. If you don't know what Wicca is, Tiernan explains it pretty well and helps you understand. Wiccans, or witches, are very close to nature and yes, they do cast spells and circles. They practice modern witchcraft. I never believed in witches or witchcraft but after reading these books, it became a lot more real to me because the time frame was set closer to our time and I could relate to the characters and the situations a lot easier. Tiernan mixes the main character, Morgan's, life with love, hate, jealousy, excitement, curiosity, discovery, pain, confusion, a new beginning, and a feel of belonging. Tiernan takes you on a ride and lets you feel the challenges and accomplishments that are ever-so-present in Morgan's life. I think the message in this book is to be open to change. Don't let change destroy you because you are narrow-minded and too comfortable where you are. Let change take its course and just ride the winds. Make the best out of bad situations and live life with a good attitude. I highly recommend this book to everyone! Especially if you want to learn a little more about the religion, Wicca. Or, even if you don't, it's still a great book!

I just purchased the first book in this series a little over a week ago, and i immediately bought the rest after only the first few chapters. It is fast paced & draws you in so you can't wait to find out what will happen next. I read all 15 books in a week! The are pretty short (around 200pgs each) so they go fast. I recommend buying the whole series at once so you don't have to wait between books. I Loved it!

This book is a start to one of the best series ever published. Constant page turner. Dont let the number of books discourage you in any way. Yes there are 15 books to this series but it never feels that way. Actually these books keep you wanting more. All characters mentioned have an important part to megans story aswell as thier own. This series is defintely a must read for all ages. I have a few of my bosses and fellow employees reading this series and they cant seem to put any of the books down till they are done. Also i did tear up during a few of the books, I just wont tell you which ones. You'll have to read them to find out.

This book is a good start to an amazing series. This entire series is about love, betrayal, magick , and the struggle to do good. When I first started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I have read the entire series, and recommend it to anyone 14 and above. And to those that say that it is a twilight wannabe , the entire sweep series was finished before the first twilight book came out, so if anything, twilight is a sweep wannabe :P

It was PERFECT...a new thrilling series. i loved Morgan who isn't like totally beautiful, but down to earth. And the author seemed to know a lot about what she was talking about. I never put it down till the last page!!!

I love this series so much that i own 3 copies of eachbook! You really feel for the charecters, the story isn't too far fetched and it isnt bogged down by superficial "poetic prose", but is instead told in a voice that would be fitting to the average person. So here's to my30 books and15 e-books. I read them often.
