Overview

The ultimate guide to the hit program Charmed, this is both a book of spells and a key to the mysteries of the show. The Book of Shadows celebrates the best of Charmed, from its roots in the ancient tradition of Wicca to insider information on the show's stars.  N.E. Genge not only provides fascinating background details for the show's Wiccan elements, but also guides readers in performing their own magic. Fans with a witchy bent will learn about the tools of magic and divination and the casting of spells. Recipes and rituals -- from those that beckon love or bless a new business venture to those that bequeath strength or bestow fortune -- are all included.  The Book of Shadows is a sassy celebration of witches, sisterhood, and magic.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
The author of The Buffy Chronicles (Three Rivers Press, 1998) and The Unofficial X-Files Companion (Crown, 1995) has produced another unauthorized tie-in to a popular television show. Amid cries of Satanism and fears that an Aaron Spelling treatment of witchcraft would stir up anti-Wiccan feelings, Charmed premiered in 1998 and has been going strong ever since, with opposition gradually fading. True, there are belly buttons and biceps, supernatural powers, demons and ghosts, and shape-shifters. There also is a core of basic Wiccan beliefs, including an altar, the celebration of sabbat, an athame for directing energy, The Book of Shadows (a general title for a Wiccan's magical workbook), triple powers that have special properties, and the Wiccan Rede, "An it harm none, do what ye will." The second half of this book explores the magical significance and Wiccan traditions of each episode during the first two years of the show, followed by bloopers and a filmography of the actresses and actors. Also explored are the basic foundations of witchcraft; the special powers of plants, crystals, and candles; how to set up a place in which to practice magic; the tools of the trade; and finally how to practice various spells and divination techniques. As a how-to book, workbook pages of Personal Growth Exercises are included. Because witchcraft is a perennial favorite, not only fans of the show but also those interested in exploring the basic tenets of witchcraft are in for a treat. Illus. I've watched the show Charmed for as long as I can remember. When I found out they had books about the series, I've been collecting every one of them. I've been seeing the Book of Shadows for about 2 years now at the store. Every time I'm there, I pick it up and look at it and somehow decided that I didn't need it. I recently received a gift card to Barnes and Noble and decided I wasn't going to wait any longer. As soon as I got the book, I fell in love with it. Its perfect for any Charmed fan. It sticks right with the show and lets you in on things that you might not have known from the show. Its the perfect gift for any lover of the show. A must buy for sure.

I think it was the best show i've ever seen. But when I first saw it I thaugt it was a little wierd. When I got into it i thaught it was cool. The two powers I want the most are moving things with my mind and orbing.

this book was ok not like the original on the tv series. however did have some of the spells and information about the cast members except paige. i can tell you just about everything about a series that has been on tv of charm. know them by heart and have all the series.

I found this book to be a waste of money. The book claims to be the ultimate guide to the show, how ever that is highly misleading. The book starts off on a sour note about everything that the show does wrong in witch craft. The theme through out this book is 'don't believe what you see on t.v.' The author does talk about witch craft, actually dedicates 3 chapters on it, however the author misses several key points and elements that are important. If you are a collector of books on witch craft then maybe this book will interest you, just read chapters 3-4. If you are looking for a nice glossy of the show Charmed with loads of pictures of the set, and the sisters then you had better wait until an official version is released. There are no pictures from the show in this book. And for true die hard charmed fans, skip chapter 5!! The author takes the time to outline each and every one of the first seasons episodes, and then exsplains how none of it makes sense. Chapter 6 is dedicated to the actors, but it's just the filmography and you can read that for free online. I think this book appeals to the younger adult crowd because it says, 'charmed' on he cover. If you are really interested in witch craft the I have listed books that would be better for you to buy.

The Book of Shadows was awesome! It helped me understand more of what was going on when I watched Charmed two sometimes three times a day. Plus it gave me great spells to try! I definatly recommend you buy it if you are a Charmed freak like me who has everything charmed! (I even have an eye shadow called Charmed which I wear everyday.) Also, Congrats to Holly Marie on her latest news! Who knows, maybe the baby will be magic!

I have loved "Charmed since the beggining, and it never gotten old. I think this just gives the show a little x-tra spunk-to let us see what we can't phisically on the show-and helps me understand it more.
