I enjoyed the book, but it needs to be updated. This book is a decent overview of Navajo history. It tells you of their background and explains the context in which they live, but has almost nothing about recent tribal issues. If you're heading to Navajoland next month and want some background, read this book. If you expect to interact with any Navajo, read the newspaper.

Indeed 'infettered by anthropological conjecture'. Also unfettered by bibliography or any useful footnotes. From the vast literature on the Navajo (and their occasional propensity to tease or mislead bellaganas), it would be useful to be able to check all sources for certain points.
