Editorial Reviews

Julian Mannering - Model Shipwright
“Mendlowitz's superb color photographs capture the real essence of traditional wooden boats and have a quality that is a step beyond the merely descriptive. . . . In every picture you feel a spark of recognition of some elemental quality of the ship or boat.”
Bill Mayher
“If wooden boats had a Dr. Doolittle, it would be Maynard Bray. He is uniquely at home in their language. Lucky for us he has shared here much of what he has learned.”
Maurine Hoffmann
The photographs illustrating this beautiful coffee-table book for boat lovers were selected from shots taken for the "Calendar of Wooden Boats". Ten years ago, photographer Benjamin Mendlowitz found his specialty in marine photography when he began an association with Maynard Bray of "WoodenBoat" magazine to produce an annual calendar. Mendlowitz's eye for color and composition, and understanding of the nature of light, artistry, and attention to detail, all combine to produce photographs that are never retouched or "improved" by photographic gimmickry, but truly capture the spirit of boats and their natural setting. During the 1960s and early 1970s, fiberglass boats were the rage. Since then, there has been a resurgence of appreciation for the beauty and craftsmanship of wooden boats. And as shown in these photographs, wonderful old wooden boats have been restored and new ones built from both traditional and new designs, so once again there are beautiful wooden boats for the world to see and enjoy. For all public libraries with a boating clientele.
Booknews
A mouth-watering encomium on power and sail boats of wood construction. The artistic and technically excellent photos of Benjamin Mendlowitz qualify this book for all photo collections (many of these have appeared in the ten year life of Calendar of wooden boats). Bray's input is in pointing out the elegance, romance, aesthetics of the very photogenic subjects. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
