Editorial Reviews

Annotations for more than one thousand books published in 1997, 1998, and 1999 are included in the latest edition of the high school bibliography series from the National Council of English Teachers. This current offering is a varied and well-documented booklist for young adult readers. A brief but insightful history of young adult literature and helpful hints for students and teachers are also included in the introduction. The editors divide the book into thirty-three headings. The bibliography covers a wide range of topics comprising fiction, nonfiction, poetry, sports, trivia, health, animals, and ecology, to name a few. The greatest number of titles, eighty-six, can be found in the Historical Fiction section. Three other sections, Family Relationships; Friendships, Choices, and Transitions; and Mysteries, Intrigue, and Suspense each have more than sixty titles. Although the editors acknowledge that the age of high school students ranges from fourteen to nineteen, a few of the books cited, such as I Spy Treasure Hunt, Squids Will Be Squid, and Scholastic Kid's Almanac for the 2lst Century, seem a little below high school level. Surprisingly there are no chapters on careers, and only six titles are listed in the chapter on colleges. Nevertheless, this text is very useful, with author, subject, and title indexes and four appendixes that list young adult literature Web sites, multicultural titles, award-winning books, and a history of the NCTE booklist. The concise and easy-to-read descriptions make it a valuable resource for school and public libraries serving high schools. Index. Biblio. Appendix. 2001, NCTE, 411p,
