Although some of the recipes are good, I like to see what the dish will look like. This book has no pictures in it other than one picture for each chapter. I have my mother's old Ebony cookbook that was published in 1962 and while the pictures are lacking in that one, too, the recipes are better than this new version.

I did not know how to cook when I got married but I was given a copy of this cookbook three years ago as a wedding gift. I have used it at least once a week with great success. The recipes are modern versions of traditional soul food. They are delicious and most are easy to make. My favorite is the skillet cabbage. Whenever I want to cook something I check this book first to see if there is a recipe for it.

This is an excellent cookbook! There are so many great recipes, you won't know which ones to try first! I love the coconut shrimp, cajun fried chicken, skillet greens with balsamic vinegar, and Greenie's sweet potato pie. The recipes are very easy to follow, even for novice cooks like myself. They don't take a lot of time to prepare either. And most of all, they are absolutely scrumptious. Ms. Lyons creates new, exciting recipes and adds her own flavor to traditional dishes. This book will definitely become a favorite in your kitchen!

I loved this book because the recipes are easy to make, quick and extremely delicious. I loved the coconut shrimp, chicken-shrimp gumbo, sweet potato salad,black-eyed pea salad, cajun fried chicken, garlicky catfish bouillabaisse, sauteed collard greens, and fruit pizza. A fresh twist on soul food favorites. Timely tips section also helpful. Great color photos.
