This movie came to me as a spectral surprise. In a way, it captured the lavish lifestyles of american expatriates in italy, in the 50's with a grotesque irony succunbing to it. The demonizing phenomenon which Tom Ripley(Matt Damon) carries with him when he is in Venice, stencilled by the musical intensity varying from scene to scene; from Bach to Charlie Parker. The music unveils the senseless, necropolis blur; hideous: the raging monster of the gorgon blinded by Tom's physiognomical purity suspensed by his geek chic. That then bursts out like a tumour in display of his morbid psycho-neurosis. When it comes to deal with Dickie(Jude Law) and Marge(Gwyneth Paltrow). It really reshaped itself in a Hitchcock' style to prove Tom's yin yang gory desires to be part of the world in which Dickie's fadish sense of aesthetics is catapulted by his father's wealth, and his own hedonism. It's a very aesthetic movie apotheosizing Minghella's cinematic glibness, moreover, with rarity. After Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock
