Overview

Featuring 375 color photos and 80 full-color detailed maps—more than any other park guidebook—this is the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book of its kind on the market today. A perennial favorite with more than a million copies sold in previous editions, it reflects National Geographic’s century-long association with America’s national parks system and its peerless reputation for travel expertise and cartographic excellence.

The guide opens with an essay by Yellowstone authority Paul Schullery, a section on how to use the guide, and a national locator map. The parks are presented alphabetically region by region, with individual maps and geographical profiles. Colorfully illustrated descriptions offer tours tailored to the time available, whether it’s an hour or a week, and tell visitors the best spots to enjoy hikes, spectacular vistas, wildlife, and more. An Information & Activities page provides practical advice on visiting—park contact information, camping and lodging, accessibility, pet restrictions, things to do, and special advisories. Excursions to nearby wildlife refuges, monuments, forests, and other areas of exceptional interest follow many of the park entries.

From planning a trip to making the most of every minute, here’s all the information anyone could want on the scenic national parks—the crown jewels of the park system—plus invaluable advice from National Geographic writers who know them well.

I got interested in the National Parks by reading Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series. My husband and I have started to visit the national parks and this book is very informative. It also gives you attractions in the area of each park. So you could spend weeks at each one. I would also recommend this book for the arm chair traveler.

If you were as inspired as I was when watching the Ken Burn's documentary The National Parks: America's Best Idea, you will find this book extremely informative. Printed on a glossy-type paper, the book has a certain elegance and is easy to read. Grouped into geographic sections, each one of the 58 scenic parks is given its own listing, complete with awe-inspiring photos, detailed maps, and general information and activities. This is a "must buy" for anyone planning a trip to one of these remarkable locations.

Used this book on a tour of the Southern Utah National Parks. Found it to be helpful and complete. The book may only reference a sentance or two about a hike, but it will be worthwhile. Purchase this book if you plan on seeing any of the parks!!!

I wouldn't dream of planning a trip to a National Park without this guide. It is a beautiful book, small, and has more information in it than all my other National Park books combined. If you can only have one book as a guide, this is the ONE. It tells you places to stay with phone numbers, it gives approximate prices. There are things to do for a short visit and things to do on a longer stay. I am retiring soon, and this is the book (along with the companion State Park guide and Scenic Routes guide) that is coming with me on my motorhome trips.
