Choice
This anthology would make a useful text or secondary text for media and politics courses, since the essays are generally accessible to undergraduates and treat a nice range of topics. Discussion questions and suggestions for further reading are also included. While accessible, the essays also employ recent scholarship in this burgeoning field.
The chapters cover many standard topics and some less usual and helpful ones such as bureaucracy, media impact, and ethics. The readings are of uniformly high quality. Some mostly summarize well-known findings, while others provide less familiar detailed information (e.g., on problems with coverage of the Supreme Court).

Media Power, Media Politics provides an excellent overview of the interaction between different governmental figures and the media. It clearly illustrates how the media covers political actors, and also how political actors seek to utilize the media. The well-written chapters are a great foundation for spurring class discussion. Of the three books I assigned for my Mass Media and Government class, this was clearly the favorite!

My students found Media Power, Media Politics easy to read and it gave them the academic foundation with which to base their theoretical understanding of the media. It is an excellent text that does not seem to go out of date quickly.

Meet the Author

Mark J. Rozell is professor of public policy at George Mason University and the author of four books on media and U.S. politics. Jeremy D. Mayer is associate professor of public policy at George Mason University and director of the Master's of Public Policy program. He is the author of Running on Race: Racial Politics in Presidential Campaigns 1960-2000.
